looks like i'll save about $400 buying an aftermarket exhaust vs buying stock replacements. what does everyone think about the staintunes exhaust? I don't want a loud bike, but a throaties rumble might be nice at times. any opinions appriciated.

I've had the Staintunes for about a year now. Personally, I can't tell much sound difference from stock, at least with the restrictors in. The sound may be a little throatier. My thing was just looks and weight savings.

Wookie, I've heard the Two Brothers exhaust on a 1300 and it sounds really good. Gives it a low, throaty growl.

This web site has some really well done audio clips of the different exhausts. I really didn't care for the appearance or sound of the Two Brothers so I went with the Staintunes. It provided a nice appearance and sound that you described. They get obnoxious sounding without the restrictors. I have been very happy with the Staintunes.

Staintunes

I have the STaintunes. They are great looking and are the only aftermarket pipes I recommend. They purrrrr. Also, one can remove the sound restrictors and make car alarms go off, like a Harley!

Staintunes have a great sound with or without the tips. I run mine without. I really like the sound. They look much better than the two brothers. They mount right to the stock mounting points with no hose clamps showing.:03biker:

What would be the reason for replacing it ?

if you mean why am i replacing my exhausts? It's because i got hit by a car, they had no insurance and every dollar saved bites away at my $1000 deductable.

Staintunes

Staintunes also here. I run w/o the resistors. I like the sound, with lower rpm it is like Ducaties. :03biker:

Staintunes (.).......got them on both bikes (.)... top shelf fit , finish and no repacking (.)........while your at it do the 61 psi pressure reg and K+N upgrade .....you will be one happy camper after that !

Read latest issue MCN

I was thinking of getting the StainTunes and power commander until I read this months Motorcycle Consumers News MCN. They said that California is considering adopting the motorcycle modification/smog laws from Germany. Very, very strict enforcement and no mods allowed except factory supplied parts that must be CARB/DMV certified and accepted before the vehicle can be reg'd and then bi-annual visual and tail pipe test. There goes all those loud H-D's.

geez just want I wanted to here, buncha people in CA givin out "tail-pipe exams" I would RUN not walk to another state.

Just installed two brothers M-2 with power tips, K&N, & Turbo City fuel reg. Carbon Fiber is amazing stuff... MUCH lighter, and cool to the touch even after riding 100 miles. Stock exhaust must be filled with concrete.... heavy as hell. Sound is good... I'm still getting used to it. Nice rumble at idle. Twist the throttle up through the gears and it reminds me of the old yamaha 650s. Very nice sound over 45 mph. Highway speed no difference over stock really. There is a drone at 30-35 mph, but I try not to go that slow anyway...

Buy them now and they will be "granfathered" into the new law....

AFAIK, there aren't any more choices over here than over there, and neither enutniatS nor TBR is road legal (because they lack the E-mark), so my solution was to buy the link pipes from TBR, and choose my own E-marked aftermarket end cans to mount on the bike. Except, I haven't actually figured out which ones to buy!

I want a removable baffle, stainless or titanium sleeve, and internals that don't need re-packing. (Sort of an E-marked Staintune, I suppose...) I'll keep you posted.

Ciao,

I try to resist reading these threads. Really I do. But it's futile. I spent big $ on some V&H 2:1 Pro Pipes on my last bike. I loved the rumble. I loved the look. The weight reduction was nice. I told myself that the better sound, added horsepower, and reduced weight justified the expense. But I quickly grew tired of the increased sound on long rides. And I'm tempted to do it all over again every time I read one of these threads! Must resist! :)

I was originally concerned about growing tired of the increased sound. I just had to try the Staintunes in an effort to lose the Singer sewing machine sound of my V4. It turns out they just sound healthy at an idle, they can definitely be heard when on the throttle although not to the level of being obnoxious, no difference at steady speeds. No constant drone that I expected. My best description is just a little healthier sounding than a stock ST1100.

Staintunes

How can you go wrong w/ a pipe named after our bike, i.e., STain Tunes ( S T).
Also, you get a nice box from Australia w/ a sticker and hat!. Seriuosly, On of the niceST additions to my bike.

Staintunes for me

I agree, Staintunes are the way to go. I rode for ten months with the baffles in as respect for my neighbors due to having to go to work early.

Getting up a 4 am is now over and the baffles are out. Not much change. Can't really hear them on the freeway. Best is coming down a steep hill in 3rd or 4th gear. They burble. Weight savings is nice, too.

Registering in California was no problem. The lady was kneeling down trying to confirm the engine serial number (Why does CA want that, I'll never know) and never even looked at the mufflers. You have to pay the difference between 7.75% sales tax and what you paid wherever you bought the STeed plus some minor amount to get a plate.

I also echo the others above about the FPR from Turbo City. The K&N will have to wait until I need a new air filter.
