I need a mechanic to do some brake work on my 2004 ST1300ABS. The local Honda Shop (Greeneville, TN) changed hands and my trusted mechanic there left. The new management said they needed "special permission" to work on anything over 10 years old, and I don't think I want to give them my "special permission" work on my bike anyway. Probably not a very difficult job, but my 72 year old arthritic hands and old limited tools just aren't up to the task. There's a few independent mechanics in the area mostly specializing in Harleys and I think that's when/where my brake problems started. I had a local mechanic change my front tire and also the front brake pads while the tire was off. As soon as I rode away from the shop I noticed the front brakes making a rattle when on rough surface or when applying the brakes. I immediately took the bike back with no resolution. Tried another local independent shop to bleed the front brakes with no luck. After reading the ST-Owners forums. I'm guessing the entire brake system needs to be bled or possibly the secondary master cylinder has gone bad. I have limited know-how and tools, bout' enough to make the problem worse, and willing to pay someone to help me out.

Where did your trusted mechanic go? Did he set up his own independent shop? It's worth looking into.

I asked about the 10 year old limit at my local BMW dealer. I think if you check around, you'll find most dealerships are going that way. The service advisor said it was because the new guys have been trained on the new technology and don't know what to do with the older technology bikes. Plus, by that time, a lot of owners have installed modifications to the bikes that really aren't done right, and creates a mess that the mechanic has to try figuring out. Time equals money for them.

I agree with all that. I also think they want us to buy new motorcycles.

Good luck.

Chris

Good idea about trying to find my previous mechanic. The said that she (yep a fantastic female motorcycle mechanic) is working on lawn mowers somewhere now.
