I had never heard of these machines before until today when I read an article in the paper about a group that uses them to groom trails for fat bikers, walkers and hikers. They can be used by hunters, ice fishers etc to pull gear in a sled that attaches at the back.

It comes with a sled that you can stand in and is pulled behind the motor unit. I've seen several on the lakes when ice fishing.

I think you left out the word tire. :rofl1: Fat tire bikers.

Why not just get a snowmobile?

Allegedly they are a third of the price. Not that I have any experience in anything to do with snow these days. Thank goodness!:thumb:

That is cool - simple and effective - I have never heard of these. Here's something I found out about when traveling in Montana. These are a pretty interesting snow vehicle, the Snowplane.

Yup, these have been around for a while. :) We have a couple of dealers in the province. One of the bicycle shops in town that my son used to work for had one for sale.

I've recently been considering a Snowdog for our community walking trails thinking it may be able to pack the snow sufficiently for foot traffic. They are used successfully to groom fatbike trails in Alberta and BC, been trying to find demo machine to trial, no luck so far

DIY build?

They are a utilitarian, stripped down & cheaper, snowmobile. Don't think you're going to see people touring trails all day long on these things.
