I have a complete shim kit on the west coast for anyone that needs to use one. Just received the replacements for the shims I used on my ST1100. Brand is Hot Cams so they are in .05mm sizes.

Shim kit is back and available if needed.............

This is the ST1300 kit but can work on the ST1100 as well right? The diameters are the same but the thickness intervals are different.

While we are on the subject,,,what range does the 1300 use? I want to skinny up any extra/unusable ones to fill the gaps in size as compared to Honda ones. or .001 difference per shim size.
Maybe I should ask in the 1300 Tech section, but if someone knows,,spill it.:)

Mark, the shims in my ST1300 are in the following ranges:
inlets: 1.83mm to 1.98 mm
exhausts: 1.51mm to 1.61mm

Just talked to STyles a little while ago. Dale it was very nice meeting you. I will get my kit shipped out in the morning to you. George I told dale that you helped me with my valve adjustment and to ping you if he had any questions when he did his. I just wanted to thank everyone in this forum for all of the help and support that I have received in the short time that I have been a member here.

Thanks John, noted. Now I can have my way with the rest. I will leave two sizes to each side of the range unchanged. Do you think that will cover it or should I expand that more?

Hi John. For intake shims, are you sure you don't mean 1.825mm to 1.975?

As far as your 1.51mm, the nearest Honda shims* to that are 1.500mm and 1.525mm; the same for your 1.61mm (1.600mm and 1.625mm).

Just curious... are these some aftermarket shims in non Honda, .025mm increments?

Regards, John

 Yes, the sizes you mention John would naturally be what are in use. The numbers I reported above are the measured thicknesses with my Starret micrometer (measured in ten thousandths, converted to mm).

Mark, leaving 2 of each shim size in the kit while you have your way with the rest would likely still be sufficient. But of course it's possible (highly unlikley, but possible) that a bike could require 8 of any once size. :shrug2:

Right, there is no perfect plan. Unless you had 10 of every size:)

I found my 1300 needed 4 of one size, 3 of another, then one odd valve that needed its own size. All on exhausts.

Thanks for clearing that up, John.

IMNSHO, there's no need to check the actual thickness of Honda shims. Every one of them that I've checked with my quality Mitutoyo metric micrometer has been spot on. Just read the marking on the shim and look at the shim list I attached above for the actual size in mm.

N.B., as to the shim markings, note that Honda has rounded down the n.n25mm shims to "nn2" and rounded up the n.n75mm shims to "nn8"; e.g., a 1.225mm shim is marked 122.

Tip I've mentioned on forums before: because the shim increments are .025mm which is almost exactly equal to one thousandth of an inch (.001"), measure valve clearances in thousandths of an inch instead of millimeters. Then use the shim list and select a new shim one size thinner or thicker than the one installed for every thousandth of an inch you wish to change the clearance. No need for any math/spreadsheet. That's the way the shop will do it. We just used this simple method on Jim Neagle's (JimSTer) ST1100. KISS

Mark and I have previously discussed his making shims for traveling STOC loaner kits. That's a great project/contribution, Mark. Thanks! Don't forget the other kit that's been out there for 5+ years now.

Regards, John

You just did, pm me your address and I will ship my kit to you on Monday. The shims are 7.48. All I ask is to replace the shims that are used. I also have source for buying the sims wholesale if you want me to restock it. Just pay for the shims you use. Honda make shims in .025 sizes and hot cams come in .05 sizes. Most of the time you can find a shim that will work.

I had it until early July, when I passed it along to Blrfl (the actual owner). Not sure where it went from there.
