SHAD Top Box Question

I've decided on a SHAD SH-46 or SH-50 Top Box. I'm hoping that ST owners who have installed a SHAD box can answer my question about whether I need a special mounting plate to install the box. There is conflicting information on the web.

CLI-maxridinggear says that SHAD cases "include a FREE universal mounting bracket that attaches to and stays on your luggage rack. Other brands make you pay extra for their base plate. Not SHAD -- Base Plate is included."

Cycle Luggage also says no special part is required. "Mounts using a universal standard bottom (mounting base) that allows it to attach to most luggage racks securely."

However, SHADonline says that I need a special part to mount the box on an ST1300. "The SHAD Topmaster fitting allows mounting a top case onto the motorcycle ... To mount the top case onto the bike it is necessary to add this kit to the plate included in the SHAD case." (Part # HOPN12ST).

Can anyone tell me which information is correct?

Thanks,

I have the first shad case in the country from tucker rockey . you can mount it with the kit but it is better to make a mounting plate . made mine out 1/4 aluminum you can use a small hard plastic cutting board also . If you want a diagram of the plate email me.

My Shad came with my bike, but I've had the mount off the bike. It has what appears to be a square, universal mounting plate with lots of holes drilled in it to match up with various existing holes on the bike. I would say that the universal plate probably comes with the box. I see no problem with this mount, I have had my box very overloaded and ride on very rough roads here in norther NH, and never had any issues. Quality wise, I would put the box with the Givi. Convenience wise, its way ahead- much like our fuel tank, a Givi requires the key every time you want to open the box or remove it from the bike. The Shad box lets you lock or unlock the box, and remove the key. Then you can open the box or remove it without the key.

I just installed a SH-50 last week. After looking at my options using just the included universal mount, I ended up going with the ST specific kit (HOPN12ST). Here's a pic of the included universal mount attached to the the ST specific mounting plate....

Pictures of the SHAD SH-50 Installed

Here's the SHAD SH-50 Top Box installed on my 2009 ST-1300. I used the SHAD-specific mounting kit, which gives the pillon a little more seating space and allows for mounting of the optional brake light kit. The brake light stays on the bike even when the box is removed. (I also added these photos to the "Show Me Your Top Box" sticky in the Luggage / Fairings Forum, just for the record.)

X2! Comes with the mount, and the fact that you don't need the key every time is a bonus! Easily removes from the bike as well.
