So since I bought a 2007 ST 1300 on Thanksgiving day, now I want to sell my other bike, the one I've had for three years and put 12,000 miles on riding in 10 states. It's a 1996 Honda Shadow VT 1100 C2 ACE. 37,200 miles.
Yes, this is the one with the single pin crankshaft that prompted Harley-Davidson to sue Honda for copying them too closely.
Plenty of power, good compression, starts easily even in the cold, runs well but of course it's nowhere near as smooth or powerful as the ST 1300.
It has a cylinder head cover/valve cover gasket oil leak. The engine would have to come out of the frame to fix this* and I'm not going to bother. It's been leaking for one year and probably hasn't lost more than 6 ounces of oil in that entire time, over several thousand miles. ( I've changed the oil twice in that year since the leak began).
The clutch was changed by the prior owner who was a full-time professional motorcycle wrench. That was 12,000 miles ago. I put a new back tire on last summer; it could use a front tire. It has some extra instrumentation that I added: a coolant temperature gauge, a volt meter which is also a forward USB charging port for your phone or other device, and it has a USB charging port in the back (both of these chargers can be cut off with a toggle switch.)
I had the brakes done this summer- I mean the summer of 2024 --along with replacing the two throttle cables.
Speaking of toggle switches that's how I control my radiator fan now -- I went through two of those thermal sensors that screw into the radiator and neither one worked right so now I keep an eye on my own coolant temperature and when it gets into the mid 90s Celsius I flip the switch. Then within minutes it's down into the 70s and I don't need the fan anymore.
Speaking of modifications some prior owner either swapped out the original back fender for an aftermarket one or bobbed it (although it looks like a very professional job on the fender.) They took off all the rear lights, license plate frame, and everything! I fabricated new components but it does look amateurish and homemade. Strong and practical, tho. Bottom line is that this bike is not a good candidate for a full factory restoration; there are much better choices out there that are closer to factory original than this one is. PS the exhaust pipes have been swapped out too, by some prior owner; it's got pretty loud Vance & Hines on it.
Bike's still insured tagged, perfectly street legal, and I could ride it anywhere (but frankly I don't wanna ride it long distance anymore). I thought about keeping it just to putt around town and on short trips within a couple hundred miles of my house, but decided that I don't have room for two bikes in my garage. ( doing so means that my riding lawnmower, wheelbarrow, and garden cart have been sitting outside rusting for the last several months!!)
Located in the north metro Atlanta area; more specifically Cumming-- about 30 miles due north of Atlanta along Georgia 400.
$1400.
