You don't need to remove the front wheel to remove the calipers. Remove the calipers and do what you need to do. To get the wheel off you need to remove the calipers first than just let them hang gently out of the way. Do
not twist or bend the hoses. Remove axle net then remove pinch bolts then remove axle. You might have to finagle the front wheel out from under the fender.

If I choose to remove and install the wheel myself for a tire change, do I need a special tool to hold one end of the axle while tightening the axle bolt?

JuST snug the pinch bolts on the opposite side and tighten. The hole in the front axle is 17mm. The head of a 10mm bolt fits :p:

So If I snug the pinch bolts one the opposite side I dont need to use anything (17mm hex or top of 10mm bolt) to hold the axle?

Snugging will hold the axle and keep it from rotating. (although I've never had the axle try to rotate as I tighten the nut)

I had to remove the front fender to get the front wheel out. I did not have the back wheel off, and could not get the front of the bike high enough for the wheel to clear the fender. No big deal as I was pulling the forks to change springs and oil.

If you are going to do your own work, I would just go out and get a 1/2 drive 17mm hex bit. This bit fits the front axle as well as the fork caps. When I tighten the axle, I use the hex bit to keep the axle from turning while I tighten the axle nut. Then tighten the nut side pinch bolts, put weight on the front of the bike, and then tighten the other side pinch bolts. This was per the shop book.
