Bike
ST1300
I recently purchased a 2002 ST1300 with only 10 thousand miles on the clock. According to old certificates these miles were mostly done up tp 2007. was at the bike shop and he said the tyre was from 2010 and did I want to change it (it looked new and maybe was in 2010). I changed the tyre anyhow. A couple of things come to mind, don't take things at face value and also could I check the integrity of the tyre just for my own satisfaction.
Having said all that, this is a wonderful bike and the second I've had. I sold a 2017 VFR1200 which disappointed with its fuel tank range especially

Hi ChrisE.

Welcome.

I switched from a Honda Shadow 1100 (V-twin cruiser) to my ST 1300 for a few reasons, one was the bigger gas tank(s) with better fuel mileage = more than twice the range.

Welcome sir.

Certainly you could check the date code on the tire sidewall but if it was from 2010 and on the bike all that time it was well past time to replace it even if it had lots of rubber left.

ST1300s have a complicated brake system and low miles on the clock is not necessarily a good thing. A comprehensive check of and replacement service of the brake fluid and operation of the secondary master cylinder is very important when putting a stored ST1300 back in service. There are tons of resources in this forum for the relatively simple service needed to set the brakes right.

I recently purchased a 2009 Piaggio MP3 with 20K miles with tires that are from 2014 and have lots of tread, but I have noticed it slip on corners a couple of times, so I plan on replacing them very soon. The tread may be good, but the rubber tends to harden and lose traction ability.

Welome aboard, Chris. Check out the article linked below:

Good call on replacing the tire.
