Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but didn't see one devoted to phones.

So I am about to purchase a new phone for myself as a birthday present. I have already decided on a iphone so don't need any advice on that one. But the latest iteration of iphones come in three sizes. The two most likely models are 6.42x3.06x.32 and 5.89x2.81x.32. I will be putting these into a waterproof case, thereby increasing their size. I want the new phone to fit into a RAM mount and I already have the largest one they offer. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of how and Iphone 16 pro max in a waterproof case fits into a ram mount?

Cannot answer your question, but I too am on the cusp of popping for a 16. I'm curious about your experience with the photos. Someone here said the new camera's (since it is 48 mp) photos are very large files, and that is a problem posting those pics unless you 'dumb down' camera.

I have also read that these advanced cameras with image stabilization should have an anti vibration mount or you can damage the phone. This will not be covered by apple's warranty.

Only way to answer your question is if you post the outside dimensions of your waterproof case. (Aren't these new phones waterproof?). Which RAM mount are you talking about? The X mount?

I would add the new ones are rather waterproof, much more than water resistant. My 13 would be bothered by rain when plug into a charger, the new 15 is not. You may want to consider a different cradle than trying to make something work. I'm using a Quadlock with wireless charging and never put it away in the rain, no issues. Also, I recommend the pro max, if you go with the 16 you're probably good for 5 years.

How do you find the water-resistance of your phone? Mine is an iPhone SE 2nd gen.

It's supposed to be similar to a 12 or 13, but the same size as my old i6, which I like.

I'm not positive if the info you want is here, but Apple does have a specification page for each phone model. They should say 'water resistant' or give more information, like can be submerged in 3' of water for 26 1/2 seconds......

Yup...
We've a thread on the Navboard unveiling that the RF emission of the TFD screens on those "new" motorcycles is upsetting the GPS reception...
Some models so bad that navigation gets impossible...

Well, the new phones are MORE waterproof. But given the conditions I tend to ride in I like to be sure about it, so a waterproof case on a water resistant phone. I have had Lifeproof cases in the past and they have protected my phone in conditions that would kill a fish.

As for the vibration factor, I've only heard of this being an issue on Harleys. The ram x-mount has rubber feet, and it's in a case. I've never had an issue with my iphones cameras. Plus Honda's just don't vibrate a lot.

As for pic size, whenever I transfer the pics from my phone to my computer I can select the size. I never pick "original size" as those are huge and I've never had a problem with the "large" or "medium" sizes being blurry when zoomed in.

The Pelican Iphone 16 pro max case is here: https://www.pelican.com/us/en/product/phone-cases-and-accessories/iphone-case/shield/pp054486/

Dimensions are 6.73x3.72x1.5

Here are some mounts that have been recommended:

Quadlocks: https://www.quadlockcase.com/ (must use their case?)

I bought this "Quad Lock" vibration damper and had to hack it up a bit so I could thread in a RAM ball mount, stuck the adhesive backed mount to my Otterbox case and it's worked great for 2 years now. Could likely just modify this included "bicycle" mount rather than the hassle I went through, It's on my RAM ball mount on my center of my bars. I'd get a pic, but I'm away from home.

I also bought one of these "bicycle" mounts and modified it to mount my phone in my truck as well. Quite handy! Maybe I should get one for my bicycle!? :rofl1:

Hey @jodog Which RAM mount do you have? The X-Grip or the Quick Grip? We have both in our household. I prefer the Quick Grip and my kid the X-Grip. Both come in regular and large versions. I tried the X-Grip but where the arms contacted my phone it would interfere with or depress side buttons when positioned so its grip was secure (Samsung Galaxy S10). So I moved to the Quick Grip, which I really like. I think it's more secure than the X-Grip. I never trusted that manner of holding the phone.

I upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and was forced to move to the Quick-Grip XL. That worked great till it didn't. Summer '23 I discovered that the primary camera in my phone was shot. It wouldn't focus reliably. All the same symptoms that the iPhones were suffering and attributed to vibration. I had the camera replaced and switched to the Quadlock with the wireless charging and vibration isolation. So far I've been happy with it, though recently RAM caught up with the trend and released a damper. I could've used that with the RAM components I already had, but I needed something now. Hardest part was getting a Quad-Lock to RAM 1" ball adapter. Best option was 3rd party.

I also like the latest Peak Design system. Theirs uses super-magnets to self align the latching system for the phone case to their mount. Very secure, very easy. While I find it secure, the Quad-Lock is challenging to align and attach to the mount I have centered between the bars on my 1300. Unfortunately they've yet to release a vibration damper, so that's a no-go for me and I stick with my Quad-lock. :)

Now that I'm 100% retired, I've just upgraded my iPhone (from a 6 to a 14), it's the first mobile that I've purchased (all previous mobiles had been supplied by work), it seems that I've got away from mobile phone bills for about 30 years.

Anyway, the iPhone 6 sat-in and was held firmly in the RAM X-Grip very nicely, although I needed to be careful when mounting it to ensure that I didn't "pinch" the volume button with one of the X-Grip's rubber grips. I did have an iPhone 7 for a while but when that got drowned (in a "water proof" motorcycle jacket pocket - Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!!), it was completely kaput and replaced (by work) with an iPhone 6. The iPhone 7 fitted in the X-Grip but I recall it being a little cumbersome and awkward fitting in many pockets, I was happy with the iPhone 6 as a replacement.

I think the new 14 is the same size as the old 7, so it being cumbersome and awkward my prove to be a concern, not so far, perhaps I've bigger pockets these days.

I've also got a couple of the quad lock knock-offs (Josh_ST's link) on the push bike, eBike and in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. These are quite a good quality items (especially for the price), but I won't be trusting them on either bike, due the bikes bouncing around on the trails and the extra weight of the new 14 - I'd be concerned that the 14 could fall off. Won't be any concerns using the quad lock in the JGC.

Unfortunate that you're stuck on IPhone.
I use a Galaxy Z Fold. When I used it as navigation device, the extra real estate was great:

View media item 408
Now I use an Android Auto "Head unit"
I saw a phone at an ATT kiosk at Costco yesterday that unfolded to a small tablet size. Pretty soon we will have one unfold like an Origami puzzle to a 100" screen.

I use an iPhone 12 mini..... on a quadlock, with no additional waterproof cover..... works fine unless it is plugged in to charge and then I get anything other than a light rain shower....

The phone then reports liquid in the charger port and stops charging..... clearly water is creeping up into the connector....

Ah well, not going to spend any more money on another model as this one works fine, unless it need charged in the rain, then it can go in the tank bag.

I used a quad lock on a couple of long trips. I found that the cordless charger kept my iphone's battery at the same level of charge over a several hour ride with the phone on. It did not increase the charge unless my phone was turned off.

My Galaxy S21 Ultra will charge to full at a 'normal' not high-speed rate. I always end a ride with a higher charge level than when I started with the original Quad-Lock wireless charger. The original uses USB Type-C connectors with weather protection seals on the cable's plugs which engage with a recess in the phone mount and the power supply. The newer design eliminates the connector on the base to eliminate a potential failure point.

I'd much rather my mount let me use the phone case I prefer, rather than one that incorporates half of the bike mount. My phone was already non-current when I chose to go Quad-Lock, so my case choices were limited to one. Same with the Peak Design case, which is much worse in my opinion.
