Its our usual mild winter start here in the UK and my ST1100 temp gauge is still running up to about half way when crawling through traffic.Its a 1990 model and no modifications.The coolant is the right level and as soon as I get moving it drops down to the starting of the journey level. Half way seems quite high to me in temps of about 7c and so far luckily its got no higher .No fan noise yet either...
Over heating or just plain normal?

That sounds normal to me for an 1100. The temperature gauge does move around a lot. On the 1300, it never moves once it's warmed up.
Sounds as though it's fine, mine does the same, especially coming up our long 1 in 4 hill in slow traffic.

It sounds normal to me. The minimum temp is set by the T-stat, but rising above that is normal.
Normal. Usually while riding mine will stay at around the 1/4 to 1/3 mark, and will only creep up if I'm in traffic. Fan won't kick on until it gets just above 1/2.
