The push pins work but I like using nut clips with stainless steel bolts.
I used them for mid cowl to inner cowl and maintenance cowl. They require a little rounding off the corners to line up.

Now I am trying to figure out which clip this is.
I use these to hold the windscreen cowl.
They have more of a reach.

I’ve bought the cheap Chinese nut clips to save money but the poor quality sent me to buying from Honda.
Using metal washers I’ve noticed a bolt or two loose over tens of thousands of miles from trying to balance too tight vs tight enough.
Hasn’t been a problem but I plan to switch to faucet washers to use the friction to keep bolt heads from turning enabling less torque to be used to retain the bolt.

The advantage of the push pin is that there is no concern about torquing bolts too hard against the bodywork. And it speeds assembly.

I always thought the 'grip' was in the short threaded section vs it being under tension via spring; and the U shape allowed it to go around a piece to stay in place and not turn in locations where you don't have access to reach in to install a nut.

I recently purchased a replacement Fairing Bolt Kit Fastener Clip Screw Kit from eBay to replace the salted out fasteners on my 2003 ST1300. The PO lived in a very heavily salted area and I decided to bling up the fasteners while replacing them with new ones. Included in the kit were nut fasteners that I used on the maintenance covers. I had been having issues with the right side cover. The nut clip fastener is much easier to use and feels very secure.

Kits like that are handy to have, but if you do not have a suitable spacer / sleeve to take the place of the shoulder on some of the original bolts, you are tightening onto the fairing. The original shoulder bolts tighten onto their shoulder and put virtually no weight on the fairing itself. I guess that the thickness of the fairing is slightly less than the length of the shoulder.
Shoulders like these on the 6mm side panel bolt.

For the inspection cover, I bought a couple of those nice domed headed allen bolts that hold the side grill in place on the st1100, and placed a trimmed captive nut clip, like the one in the photo above on the tab where the push rivet fits. It's a nice looking neat solution.

nb an illustrated list of all of the common bolts and rivets, with part numbers and location is included in the last couple of pages of this article. Download the pdf linked in post#1.

When I had to replace a few of my side tupperware bolts by the battery I too found the issue of not having a shoulder. I substituted a small rubber o-ring style washer that fit inside (where the shoulder would be on the above bolt photo.) As there's no need for massive torque on those bolts it worked fine keeping the plastics off the frame. Not the ideal way but that's all I had on hand.

I have just received my kit from China - excellent quality. I chose it because it included shoulder bolts - actually the shoulders are separate to the bolts but worked well. Kit even came with a list/diagram showing where they all fit.

In view of the current virus, I donned my 'rubber' gloves and opened the package. Disposed of packaging. Sprayed the individual polythene bags. Disposed of bags and used my own.

No, I didn't spray the individual items. Took a chance.
