Mityvac vacuum issues...suggestions?

I went to use my 2 year old mityvac vacuum pump to perform a brake bleed and learned that the MVA6910 4.5 oz Fluid Reservoir wouldn't hold a vacuum. Is there any repair for this or a better vacuum tool?

(Since I was short on time and solutions, I ended up purchasing a new mityvac kit at Autozone for $35 and completed my brake and clutch flush. I do anticipate the same problem with the new Fluid Reservoir over time).

I don't know of anything better for a tool. Some use speed bleeders. Seems to be a good option. I just have my daughter help, have her pump the brakes at the same time as I use the Mitey Vac. The teflon tape on all bleeders was a must.

The Mityvac pump works great. It is the Fluid Reservoir that doesn't work well over time.

In my free time over the next couple of months, I'm going to search for a better sealing Fluid Reservoir for future use. I bet there is something that may be available in the field of chemistry. Another option may be to get a great sealing mason jar with a rubber gasket in the lid - like for canning peaches - and drill two holes in the top and use good gaskets and sealants for the vacuum and fluid fittings.

Wrap the reservoir's threads with Teflon tape. I purchased the optional, larger reservoir with my Mityvac, and it had the same problem. It wouldn't hold vacuum. I wrapped the threads good with Teflon tape and the problem was solved. If it's good for the threads on the bleeders, it's good for the threads on the reservoir.

I like this idea a lot. The larger reservoir is $9.00 on Amazon and I have plenty of teflon tape.

I too discovered my reservoir was leaking when I sealed the hose and applied vacuum, this is a great tip, thanks!

I mis-read your post, sorry about that. My MityVac, the pump went south, not the reservoir. Purchased a generic HF version that lasted all of a year before it failed. I haven't replaced it yet but at some point will get another MityVac, mainly for various other tasks. I've got brakes covered now and don't have to bother with the cleanup on the MityVac anymore.

Check and see if the HF one has a lifetime warranty. Quite a bit of their stuff does. Just bring it back and get a new one. It may be more of a hassle if you mail ordered it I guess.

I am not saying this is the reason for the failure but I stored a mityvac in a way that allowed brake fluid to get into the hand pump and ruined it after one use. I store the replacement with the pump higher than the catch jar and it's worked several years now.

I make a large bottle from an empty Moyo jar. i put two fittings in the top and put a bunch of epoxy around them. the jar seals well and should last.

Probably should have checked but it was tossed a while back.

I happened to go to their web site a little bit ago to look at something else and checked. It was only a 90 day warranty. I had to laugh the other day. I went there and picked up a welding rod case. Basically it is a plastic case with a rubber gasket. That had a 90 day limited warranty. I'm thinking what the heck could go wrong with it. It is a plastic case..
