2006 ST1300. Replacing the kick stand sensor. How much of the faring do I need to remove? Thank you.

I don't remember if there is a connector near the side stand switch, but if not...

I'm not sure, but I'd pull the lower cowl and the left side (middle?) big cowl piece. Of course, that means the stuff behind the wheel and up inside the forks too. then follow the wire.

Thanks. I'll try that. Anyone else got pics?

You shouldn’t have to remove anything other than the small side cover by the preload adjuster, and maybe the lower black cowl on the left side.
Here is what the switch and routing look like.
Disconnect it and tie a string to it and then pull it out, the string will redirect it back into the right position when the new one is being installed.
Do you have a service manual?
Just curious, why are you replacing this?

Wow. Thank you. Great idea with the string. Yes. I just got the manual. I am replacing it because the bike won't start. It was running perfectly and then nothing. My first plan is to replace the kickstand switch. This was recommended by about six people.

I don't think the kickstand switch has anything to do with starting the motor. IIRC, you cannot shift into gear with the stand deployed, but you can start the bike. Guys with more experience (and a copy of the wiring diagram) will chime in here.

The side-stand switch can only prevent the engine from starting when the transmission is not in neutral. For the engine not to start when the transmission is in neutral requires that there be a defective neutral switch. If the transmission is in neutral, and the neutral switch is working properly, the side-stand switch is bypassed and what it is doing is irrelevant.

A quick check of the neutral switch is if the neutral light in the instrument cluster illuminates when the transmission is in neutral and the key is in the on position. The neutral switch only provides a ground path. If the neutral light illuminates the neutral switch is working because it also provides the ground path for the neutral light.

What are the symptoms, the conditions, and what have you checked so far with what results. With more information we stand a better chance of providing you with useful information.

i.e. - The basics.
- Does it crank over.
- Does it have spark.
- Does it have fuel getting to the cylinders.
- Is the fuel pump working.
