Hi everybody. I first registered here five weeks ago when I was looking at a used 2007 Honda ST 1300 for sale close to me. I took it for a test ride and liked it but said to myself I need to sell my old motorcycle before I buy this new one.
Well, the owner called me a couple days ago and said he'd dramatically reduced the price and we talked about trade offers for sports equipment along with some cash... and we made the deal yesterday!

So now I have this motorcycle, the first sport touring bike I've ever owned.

My 1996 Honda Shadow 1100 was a good "first street bike" for me to learn on, to transition from dirt bikes / enduros to real motorcycles made for the road
I've had it 3 years, put 12,000 miles on it, and used it in 10 states all across the Southeast.

In 2023 I bought a friend's Harley Sportster 883 because he needed to sell it when he was moving out of state across the country (giving up motorcycles, at least for a few years). His bike ran fine and I bought it at a time when my bike was disassembled in my garage trying to track down a fuel leak.

I rode the Sportster for 3 months, nearly 2000 more miles, and I liked it --but not as much as I like my Shadow so I sold the Harley in the fall of last year.

Pics of my new ride:

(PS: I do not have an owners manual or shop manual for it. I do not know anything about how to operate this bike's features or service it, other than what I've been able to figure out on the fly and having some brief 10 minutes worth of instruction from the seller. I'm going to have to tap into the knowledge bank here and learn a lot over the next months.)

Welcome to the forum, from just down the road in Canton, GA. Despite all the tupperware in the way, it is not a bad bike to work on.

There is one thread that describes the necessary maintenance items on a "new to you" bike....worth looking up.

Welcome from Maryland.

Loads of good info on every conceivable maintenance and troubleshooting topic related to your new ride can be found here.

@aniwack s in Atlanta and has recently assumed the mantle of ST Whisperer.

Look for the official Honda service manual; despite a couple errors and a few more-complicated-than-necessary procedures it's a great resource.

After you're done with all the new-to-you checks on the list, regular maintenance will be easy. Even valve clearance checks and shim changes, if needed, are relatively straightforward. Get a set of angled feeler gauges if you can, to make those tasks easier. They do make a difference.

Thanks, I already read those several pages about what to do to /what to inspect on a USED bike that is new to you.

I can't do any of that right now --I don't know the first thing about the characteristics of this bike or how to access any of its components, other than the seller showed me how to unlock the panniers and open the gas cap.

The guy who sold it to me was selling it on behalf of his elderly father who never rode the bike but bought it from a similarly elderly man whose wife got mad at him and made him sell it in a hurry without even time to advertise it to the general public.

Thus, the man who sold it to me has never done anything to the bike other than start it up and ride it around his neighborhood for about 10 miles once a month while the bike was in storage.

Before that, this man's elderly father never used the bike --- either not at all or only took it on one short ride before deciding that he didn't like it as much as the other motorcycle he already owned, so he offered it to his son. The son briefly considered owning it, but ultimately decided to just help his father sell it.

THIS MEANS that both the guy I bought it from (who lives only 15 miles away from me) and his father can't help me with basic tasks regarding this motorcycle --they have almost no experience on it.

KlapRoth, I'll buy you dinner if you could meet me somewhere in Canton, Holly Springs, Woodstock, Ball Ground etc.

to show me, right there in the parking lot, some basic things about how to check the fluids on this bike, any quirks about its operation --- things that I wouldn't necessarily know from having owned a Honda Shadow 1100 for a few years or from having owned a Honda dirt-bike back in the 1980s.
