I find this amusing. Is it just me?

1996 ST1100
I have to chuckle every time I see something like this, and wondered if its just me. I could give multiple examples, but since there is one with a motorcycle, I'll use it.

There is a craigslist ad for an 02 ST1100 ABS, 68K miles, not far from me. I think what they are asking is a bit high, and, apparently, so does everyone else.

What I find funny is the person selling the bike has continually reposted the add, for the same price, stating it has the same mileage, for probably 18 months now.

That would tell me they are not riding it, or at least not much. I could see MAYBE someone is doing this because their significant other (or someone) demanded it be sold and they really didn't want to, but then I think the mileage would keep increasing.... I suppose there could be multiple other reasons as well.

But why would someone - who really wanted to sell something - not figure out after a few months that they must be asking too much for whatever it is they are selling if it doesn't sell?

There is an item in the "sporting good" section someone keeps relisting over and over - that you can go buy new for less money that they are asking....

Maybe I am just thinking way too much about it.

There's a small Givi topcase that's someones been selling... same price, for the last 5 years.... I looked at it for the bike I had 3 bikes ago.

Why don't you go talk to the guy, since you said he is not far from you? Then you can bring the story back here and maybe even help him sell it.

I have been going to small engine shows for more than 15 years, and many of them have flea markets. I wondered why these guys haul around huge trailers with (as I smilingly say) stuff rejected by junk yards. At one of these shows, I talked to one of the vendors. He said you would be surprised what some people would pay for old stuff (carefully avoiding the j word), and where else can you earn a living breathing clean air, out in the sunshine with your own hours, as your own boss? Many of these guys travel from show to show - flea market to flea market, picking up junk along the way and offering it for sale. Not my style, but I get what he is saying. I will also add that this is a cash economy, with very little record keeping...draw your own conclusions.

I occasionally browse my local Facebook marketplace ads for motorcycles. I find that motorcycles priced to sell are sold within hours of posting while unrealistically expensive bikes sit for months. If you want a good deal you have to watch the ads like a hawk otherwise all you see are overpriced machines. It also seems to me that people overestimate the value of their rough around the edges but mechanically sound UJM bikes from the 70s and 80s.

Sorry - should have included that - $3800, which is not too crazy, but when it's been for sale for over a year at that price... the ad also days it is in good condition (not excellent - so I give him credit for that) and it SAYS he has saddle bags for it, but are not shown in any of the photos....

And yes, I thought about contacting him/going to see it, seeing if he was willing to come off the number some, but I'm not real good at that, afraid of offending someone. And do I really need another ST?

For a ST1100, ABSII, good condition, low miles (less than 50,000) - about $2500 is the 'saleable' price.
They may can get more but it will be a 'long wait' - and the buyer will be somebody that really, really wants the bike.
As I have said before, the general public don't want them because of their age and they are not 'classic' in the market.
The fellers (like me) that have a few are not going to pay premium for them since we know that all maintenance will have to be done by us.

UP - I was thinking $2500 was about the top end of it's value, unless it had really low miles.... which this one does not....

More than the actual numbers, I just laugh to myself when I see the same ad, same price, over and over and over....

Yeah for that bike with those miles, he's about $2000 too 'rich' ... ;)

As my realtor said "You can list it or you can sell it." If you you sell it you will think you left money on the table. If you list it too high you might have some lookers but no offers.

By the same token you never know unless you ask. My guess is if it hasn't moved in a month (and it's not winter) it might be too high.

LOL I watched my 09 ST on craigs list for over a year at $9300. The next fall I offered $6000 and bought it for $6300. Yes there are hopeful sellers but in person they become realists.

I watched a number of ST1300s last year. Most were asking in the $4000 range for pretty high mileage models. I opted for a non-runner that had been sitting for over two years. I like a challenge and I am still working out the kinks. I paid $2300 and probably could have talked him down but he did help me load it so that was a real plus. It's a big heavy dead weight!

I was curious about an ad for a bike that was way over what it was worth and called to see what the deal was….
The seller, added up every oil change, oil filter, tires, battery, coolant, plugs, and even FUEL he used during the time he rode it, and wanted to get all that back!
He then went on to say that he needed to get that price out of it to purchase a new one at that price :rofl1:
You just can’t fix stupid I guess.
Then there was a 2013 (going from memory) triumph McQueen model that the fool took a sharpie and signed the tank trying to pass it off as Steve McQueen signed it himself.
Let’s see, how many years has he been dead before that model came out?

Then of course there was the ST1100 that had a custom "one of a kind" sharpie, custom artwork on the tank, no bodywork on the bike at all, bald tires, dead battery, and oh yeah, no title! But the seller offered a written bill of sale only.
I’m sure sometime at a service, someone would probably find some meth stashed somewhere :rofl1:

These 1100s are hard to find parts and when you do, they are expensive. I am going to use mine as a grocery getter then use it as a trade in for another newer bike.
