Thinking about a new bike. Will need a backrest for the wife/trunk. How many liters capacity does it take to store a L and an XL modular helmet at the same time? Any ideas? 42L, 46L, 52 liter? Thinking Shad or Givi.

Neither my Bestem box on my 1100 nor the Givi 47L on the 1300 will close with both a large and small size helmet inside. Both are full face HJC's. Nothing else in the boxes.

It depends on box shape and helmet models, but I can fit our two helmets in my Bestem 929 46L...

That a Shoei Multitec modular on the left and a Bilt full face on the right. I do have to unclip the Sena SMH10s off of each to get them to fit.

Of course, I have to pull that pic out every time to remember how to get 'em in. ;)

I don't know if you have priorities other than fitting your two helmets but I were in the market the Shad 58X would be The One. It's a great looking case (one of my key metrics) and it sizes to fit.

This thread talked about getting a better price which might still be possible maybe not to mention giving a pretty good review of the box.

The Shad is a cool top box, it can expand to hold quite a volume....kind of like my Mother's purse.

I had seen and read that thread. Seems it expands vertically and not sure if that would be advantageous for fitting helmets or just gear.

One thing to consider is the type of helmet and whether you have a communicator installed.

I have the hondaline top box and when my wife and myself got a pair of Sena 20S' for the helmets we starting having difficulty fitting the helmets in the top case together. We ended up being able to do it by having one sitting up and one on the side. Prior to the communicators we could fit them in any way (front or back, on their side or right side up.) So if you don't have communicators but may in the future its something to consider.

Our helmets are not modular but a L Bell Star Carbon (previous model) and a XS Arai Quantum X (round shape) were what we have. Our communicators stick out about 1.25" from the side of the helmet.

Also in terms of helmet sizes, some manufacturers will share a outer shell across multiple sizes so depending on your model your XL might have the same outer shell as an XXXL.

I would either try it out in a local shop, or measure your helmet dimensions and look up the dimensions of the box online.

The other thing to consider is max load capacity. We looked at getting another box but the other boxes we looked at were heavier and that all eats away at the max load capacity for the rear carrier. All the options we looked at were heavier than what we have or couldn't fit our helmets so we have paused our search for a different top case.

Yes, I have a Scala and the marginal extra width means my modular helmet barely fits in my Givi 52l Maxia. You might want to skip this as a requirement and just get an accessory helmet locking device.

I have a Givi Maxia 52( e?) top box and it holds my large and my wife's small helmets with intercoms attached. Hope that is helpful for you.

Sounds like it. I use Helmet Guardians on all my other bikes, and have for years. Just thought it might be nice to have them weather protected. We've had 8" on rain this month in the Ohio valley, has me thinking about keeping stuff dry lol

As others have mentioned, it really depends. Different brands, and models, of helmets use different shell sizes so an L and XL of one brand may fit but another brand will not. I have a 46L Givi. It would hold a S and XL Shoei RF1000's easily (with no comms). However a small HJC Syntac 3 and XL Shoei Neotec will not fit. As suggested. might be best to go to a place that has some in stock and try them out. Save the hassle of buying the wrong one and having to exchange it.

I'm sure shell sizes are getting bigger. Both of our helmets would fit in either panniers or top box, not now. Wonder if it's down to having to pass more stringent testing regs. Bigger shell, more lining, etc.
I agree though, you need to test one out, I think the expandable box will be my next.
Upt'North.

I think it really depends on the shape of the box. Ours is a 45L and we still manage to get a L and XS and a L and S in there with the communicators / intercoms. It really depends on the shape of the box and helmets. Ours top box is not square but wider at the bottom than top which helps to accomodate the lids.

My Givi V46 will fit a pair of Shoei size L helmets if you lay them on their side. Seeing as how my top box is a catch all for everything I want easily at hand, I never have room to fit my helmet. Lucking I can fit one helmet in my side bags.
