Hi all, I'm a new member on the site and I live in western MT. My current bike is an NC700X, but I've been thinking about getting another bike for longer rides. I had an '84 GL1200A a while back and loved it, but at the time I was mostly just commuting ~15miles and on the hot summer days all the tupperware just made the ride too hot. I sold that and bought the NC700X which is perfect for commuting. But, despite a number of mods for comfort I'm just not able to ride it more than about an hour. I work from home now, and can be mobile. Which means I can ride somewhere, spend time in other areas and work from wherever I can find decent wifi. So I'm thinking about getting a more touring oriented bike, but not really wanting to go back to a Wing just yet. So, I'm in the market. I tried out an R1100RT last week with lots of upgrades including suspension, but it just didn't sing to me.
Anyhoo, I'm here to do some research and see what's out there.

Welcome from WA STate....

You will love an st1300. Find one to test before you buy anything else.

Welcome to the site. I am pretty sure that all of us here like STs so you will have to find one to test ride. I think that any bike needs to be set up for its rider to make it all day comfortable. There are loads of tips on this site if you get a ST.

Thanks all for the welcome. I'm in no particular hurry, and prices seems to be dropping for lots of things right now. Add in the typical fall pricing for summer toys and it's likely a buyer's market. :)

Howdy from Alabama!
With the climate cooling in your part of the world, you'll definitely appreciate the added weather protection of the fully-faired 1300.
Add Warm and Safe jacket and gloves, and you can set the new cold temperature record we see here every winter.
*brrrr!*
If I come to visit you, it will be in summer. No worries, it won't be THIS summer.

Back when I worked at a Honda store I put a lot of miles on a demo NC700 DCT. The bike was fun, nimble and the DCT made it an easy riding bike. You are correct, it's just a little on the light side for long distance work plus it could use another 100ccs. You will love the ST. It just eats the miles and is a blast when the road has some curves in it. Do not be put off by the initial bulk. A ST will feel huge but it doesn't feel that way when you are under weigh.

Howdy and welcome to the forum

I recognize the name since I have an NC 750 too, and am on that forum as well.

I had an ST 1300 for 10 years and 110,000 miles ridden from Maine to California to Washington to Mississippi. Great bike. However, Honda chose to never update it. No cruise, no abs, no heated grips, no modes, no 6 speed and still a lot of weight...and the latest new ST 1300 they made was 12 years ago. When I decided to upgrade in 2018 there was no new one's available, so I went with an FJR. I like buying new bikes, so I know how the bike was treated and maintained from mile 1. Anyhow, these are well made, durable bikes so finding a well maintained used one should not be an issue and they often show up here in the classifieds. These guys are very knowledgeable when it comes to ST's and generally there are only 2 things you need to look out for and that's the SMC or secondary master cylinder and the other is the thermostat. The thermostat is no big deal but the SMC could be. Another issue is if you don't do your own service work, most Honda shops are not familiar with ST 1300's and some shops won't work on bikes over 10 years old.

I would suggest as well as the ST 1300 to consider Yamaha FJR particularly 2016 and up, Suzuki 1000GT, Kawasaki 1000 Versys and SX , and Yamaha 900 GT, maybe Honda Africa Twin and Yamaha 1000 Tenere'.

I wish Honda had brought in the NT 1100 as I would have suggested looking at that as well.

Good luck with your search.

Welcome to the forum!

I have a son that lives in Kalispell. He also has a ST1300.

:hat3:

Hey Ferret, I recognize you as well! Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into those as well. My budget won't allow new bikes, but you never know what kinda deals might pop up. I do all my own wrenching, so not a big deal there. While I like the AT, so far those are still priced above my budget.

Big_Jim, the ST size doesn't intimidate me one bit. Other bikes in my past include a couple other Wings, a KZ1000, a Transalp, an NX250, a Seca 750 and several different dirt bikes,

this one just popped up here due east of you...don't know anything about it but the mileage is low lol. Guy only has 3 posts and 2 of them are in this thread so no history to check here.

@Big Jim 59 .... I used to call my ST a whale when pushing it around in the garage and a killer whale while riding thru the curves lol

yea, I saw that one but it's a long drive. There's a few just over the line in ID that could be an easy day driver over/ride back. And a nice FJR near Butte.
