Heated grips causing sluggish throttle response

I turned my heated grips on the low setting while riding today and the throttle response got very sluggish. Weird. I finally turned the heat off and everything returned to normal. What is going on?

Good question..... are these factory grips or aftermarket. Where are they connected?
One thing to do is unplug them at the power source, then test the resistance, between power wire and the ground wire of the grip wiring. Also test the power wire to chassis ground to determine if there is a short in the grip harness. Let us know....

Thank you for the help!

They are aftermarket grips that were installed by the previous owner. I'm not sure how he wired them, but I'll check on them tomorrow if I can according to the instructions you've given me. I will post photos.

Info.

If these are Honda grips - do not put an ohmmeter across the controller. Or to wires directly connected to the controller. The instruction manual warns against it. The battery power from the meter (required to measure resistance) does nasty things to the controller's electronics.

Also, Honda grips are wired in series. Other makes are often wired in parallel.

Honda bullet connectors require loads of Oomph to separate them and to put them together again. If they go together easily, then they are usually not together.

(edit - your reply popped up just before I hit Enter, I'll leave the above info there though )

I did have some aftermarket grips melt or wear through their insulation. The ends of the wires - one long wire, laid in a series of loops along the length of the grip. Part of one loop was touching another, so the effective length of wire was shortened - resulting in a very hot section of wire. Not enough for a short circuit, but very little resistance.

I just saw your post. Thank you for the warning! The previous owner said he'd added heated grips so I'm assuming they aren't Honda, but I'm going to make darn sure.
