Header coating to decrease temps

Hello, I am new here and new to the st1300. I was thinking of jet hot coating my header pipes to lower temps, I thought I would include the email I got back from jet hot for anyone that might be considering it. Any input/opinions appreciated. I was thinking the extreme sterling coating.
(I have nothing to do with them BTW)

header life by at least 10 times, and improves safety in an accident by
reducing the probability of fire-balling. It is also very easy to keep
clean. If you use one of the other 1300 colors, they perform as well, but

If you upgrade to the EXTREME STERLING you get a coating that will stay
shiny 200?F higher than Sterling, and take a maximum temperature of 1700?F,
though it does have an orange-peel texture compared to 1300 Sterling. It
will also provide an estimated 100?F more of insulation and carries a 5 year
warranty. It is recommended for low boost turbo and supercharged vehicles,
and lean running EFI cars. Cost is $50 more, and takes an extra 2-3 days to

The 2000 only comes in a flat black, blue or grey finish and has a rough

I think their claims hold some truth. I had them coat the exhaust collector on my V65 Sabre for cosmetic purposes and it does seem that the pipes run cooler now. The coating is more durable than I expected as well.
 
Or for a lot less money go to Jegs and get some header wrap and cover your headers with that. I did mine in late 2004 or 2005 and they are holding up fine. It does basically the same thing as Jet coatings keeping the heat in the headers for better scavenging of exhaust gases. I used black so they would not stand out.
 
I had my header pipes Jet Hot coated 2 years ago and I am satisfied with the results - the 1300 Sterling coating will work fine on an ST. There are a couple of things to be aware of if you plan on having ceramic coatings put on your ST:
1. Any exhaust pipe interface surfaces or threads need to be marked so they are not coated. If a coating is applied to the ID where the exhaust pipe seals fit, they will never go back together the same way. New seals will be required for these areas, I think they are about $40.
2. The seal surface at the head end of the pipes will need to have the coating cleaned off for each cylinder. The coating does not go on consistent enough to create a good seal surface. I used an india stone and and worked each seat back to the base metal.
I don't think that the coatings offer any noticable performance improvements. I didn't dyno my bike before and after to verify this, but I know I have more than enough power to get me into trouble. The two main advantages are the thermal barrier, I have use ceramic coatings on other vehicles and I know this is an advantage, and your pipes will look great for the entire life of the bike.

Turbo Tom sells a header wrap kit for the ST. It is very reasonable for what you get. I wrapped mine 1 year ago. It changed the heat pattern, some for the better, some for the worse. The feet/lower legs are cooler. There is more heat pouring from the cylinder head and front of the seat. I do believe they helped slightly, but not as much as I would have liked.

Removing the inner panels is the most significant change to reducing the heat that I have found. To help the passenger, replace the hot catalytic/mufflers with Two Bros or Staintunes.

If you really want heat, just ride the old or new Kawasaki Concours! Hop back on the ST and cool off....
 
On my 05 I had Performance Coating ceramic coat my headers and couldn't really tell any difference in heat. For sure they didn't drop the pipe temp 300 degrees as stated in Jet Hot's letter.

I later put Jegs thermal wrap on top of the ceramic coated pipes.
 
I wrapped my headers with Turbo Tom's header wrap. It works fine. I don't notice as much heat flowing from the sides, but now I notice the heat at my ankles from the catcons (when I am stopped or going slowly).
 
I had the jet hot coating on a header on a previous bike, the coating held up great for 14 years. I was very happy with their product.
 
I had my exhaust ceramic coated right here in Edmonton. We have a couple of local powder coaters who do it and use the same ceramic consumable (powder) that Jet-Hot uses.

There is nothing special about what they do (Jet-Hot) in other words any good powder coater who lives near you can do the same job, no need to ship to Jet -Hot.

I had mine done in silver, they look awesome and have decreased the heat around my feet and lower legs drastically.

The coating most definitely lowers the skin temp of the pipe. I believe they flow better too as the inside is coated smoothly with ceramic as well.

The most effective exhaust heat reduction comes from the ceramic coating along with aftermarket pipes like my Staintunes.

They run much cooler than the stock exhaust.

I would never wrap pipes, the extreme heat buildup is not good for the material the pipes are made of and will shorten the life span.

BS the pipes are stainless, mine are fine after 5 years. It cost me about $40, do the math. I can put my hand on the exhaust pipe and hold it there for about 2 minutes, you try that.
