Hammerite spray, brush-on or alternatives?

Hi everyone,

Ive finished priming the front of my frame with zinc primer. It’s looking much healthier now!

question is, do I use brush-on hammerite, spray on hammerite or another brand?

i’m looking for a decent finish - I can spray rattle cans pretty smoothly but I’ve only used bodyshop paint before now, not hammerite tough paint. Does the brush-on stuff go on smoothly, or do you wind up with brush marks?

I’m inclined to go for a spray type paint, but will listen to the collective wisdom and experience here first!

I prefer a spray application; but then I am fairly good at rattle-can. Also, you don't get those irritating brush marks...
Please tell me you taped over your vin plate...
 
You have to put the tinned paint on pretty thickly to get good coverage and avoid brushmarks, and it becomes pretty treacly to work with rather quickly. My modus operandi is brush where it's not seen and spray where it will be.

That’s exactly what’s happened!

The only reason I didn’t show the other side of the frame is because the frame number stamp is clear, and I’m paranoid that the registration number and frame number together can be used to clone a bike’s registration certificate.

Unlikely, I know, but knowing my luck…

I think you read my mind Hound! I’ve ordered a tin of Hammerite spray gloss black for the frame and outside of the swing arm, and I’ll use the brush on stuff for inside and around the front of the swing arm.

I spose it's a bit of both. I think its claim to fame is that I think it's sold as a self primering all in one finish. But I've always found it too thick to brush, a bit like trying to spread marmalade. The spray is OK but it has strict recoating routine, time etc. You can thin down the brush paint with cellulose thinners.
I think the name came because originally it had a hammered finish but it's now available in plain finish too.
There are lots of lookalikes out there now which do a similar job at a much cheaper price.

Thanks for the heads up!

I’ve got lots I can be getting on with before I need to touch it again after spraying it, so that works out quite well. Forks and radiator to refurbish, clutch to address, calipers to rebuild…. Might be able to leave it alone for a couple of weeks.

Upt is right, it’s pretty warm at the moment - curing should go well!
