Hi all,

A million thanks to DannyK, He came over today and we spent about 9 hours installing my radio, Stebel, heated grips, 12v socket, and autocom...I think that was all...

for the radio, we powered it from the quartet harness. We put a hitachi connector on the radio wires that would plug directly to the harness. we then made a 16" pigtail to go between the harness and radio, making it easy to disconnect the radio if the fairing needs to be removed and to insure that wires could not be crossed when connecting everything. we then connected the power for the amplified antenna directly to the switched radio wire. we connected the left and right front speaker wires to the autocom cable...and we had music:D ....after one small little glitch was figured out with the autocom...

the antenna was purchased from crutchfield, it was 4"x7/8", it was mounted under the front fairing, basically right above the right mirror..not exposed, no body can see it.

the black box is just sitting in the left fairing pocket, with some padding

here are a few pics to give you some ideas, sorry no pics during the install....

Dan, the ride home was great with the fresh smells and all, we had a little rain up our way, before I got there I might add, but the bambi's were out in force last night, saw at least 6 just on the cut across from rr to 35 south of perkins. Speed traveled 50mph actual to give me a chance, might have worn out half of the new brake pads on that ride alone.:D :biker:

the deer have been out in full force for the last three weeks or so!!!! I am seeing between 30-40 every night on my way home from work....I'm pretty sure it's taken it's toll on my pads! Thanks again Danny

oh and I did have to move the autocom. I have removed the rubber stops under the seat, so it sits even lower...it's now in the tail by the cruise...

key is still petty easy to get to, just has to be put in directly from above.

ran the gas so low so it would be easier to move the tank...

today, got go for a run, then fill up and take the official test drive!

Wannabe2,

So, what do you think of your radio?

I've been toying around with the idea of installing one on my bike (04 ST13400). What speakers did you use?

Thanks,
tman

Hi Tman,

like Danny said...had to get a special cable and just routed it through the autocom. I don't really like the speakers in my helmet...eventually I'll get the fitted earplugs with speakers in them.

for the radio, it's pretty nice. the only negatives for it are that the volume knob also controls the treble, bass, etc...it's pretty sensitive, so trying to adjust the volume with gloves on, sometimes I end up adjusting the bass or whatever else. I called prospec, but there is no way to disable the other features of that button and only have it work the volume. other than that, it only gets about half the radio stations my car does, which I am thinking a better antenna could help with. but it gives me enough music for when I want it. In the Smokies this weekend, I didn't have the radio on most of the time...because it really distracted me when I needed all my attention on the curves I was encountering...but there were a few times that it wouldn't pick up any stations...

hope that answers your questions...let me know if you need anything else

Dan,

I do have some follow-up questions if you don?t mind.

Looking at one of the pictures you provided, you indicated that you cut the power connector and used Hitachi style connectors for power and ground. Which wires from the radio are power & ground? Did you end up using the quartet harness or do your own thing?

How did you route the wires out of the left fairing pocket?

Thanks,
tman

power was run from the black connector on the quartet harness, it has switched power, constant power, and ground. I don't recall which wire was which but they are all indicated in the manual. (purchased the hitachi connectors from www.electricalconnection.com)

we used a large socket, heated it up and then bored (sp?) a hole through the front of the fairing pocket. all of the excess wire is under the front faring as there is a pretty large opening basically above the mirror. that's also where the quartet harness is run to.

Tell me about the Autocom - where did you get it from (retail store or website - and address of website if on internet) price and model purchased. I am very interested in getting an Autocom and looking for best price. thanks
