I've used a RAM ball mount for years now on my 2005. It fits in the center of the bars and works great. You also need the RAM mount bracket to fit on the back of your particular GPS unit. I switch my GPS between both of my bikes and my car as they all have a ball mount installed.

I bought my RAM mount in 2011 and the part number was RAM-B-236. Here's a link.

My first bike GPS was a Garmin Nuvi for cars. I bought a square based RAM ball that I bolted to the back of a plastic holder for the Nuvi. Your standard RAM connector then grabbed the GPS's ball and the ball on the dash of my ST.

Check out Touratech. Their hardware is first rate...and the prices will make you gasp. But top of the line hardware costs money.

I recently got a Garmin Zumo XT. It came with all the necessary hardware to mount on a RAM mount. It comes with a RAM mount for the handlebar, and one for the brake or clutch fluid reservoir. I bought an extra mounting kit and wiring harness to be able to use it on 2 bikes. It needs to be hard wired, so on my ST1300, I'll connect it to the Quartet Harness up front.
