If you put Honda front pads in the rear caliper, they will not release properly and will bind. That is because although the backing plates for the pre 2008 models are the same size, the tab end is a different shape. The tab end is the opposite end to the hole through which the pad pin fits. The front pad tab is square. the rear pad is the same but has a small rectangular notch in it. This fits over a corresponding ridge in the chrome pad retaining clip. Put the square tab end of the front pad in there, the ridge will make the pad lock up solid when it tries to release when the brake pedal/ lever is released.
Rear pads will fit in the front without binding, but since new rear pads have significantly more friction material than the front, then they will only fit when they have worn down a lot.
Companies like EBC get round this by making all pads with a thinner backing plate which has the notch - front or back. And the rear pads have much less friction material than OEM which may mean that they need to be changed before the recommended mileage in the service schedule.
Note that the rear pads have a white heat insulation layer fitted between the silver anti squeal plate and the backing plate of the pad.
