Helmets Flip up helmet with sun visor, like it or not?

. . . I"m going to the shop saturday and see if they have one of the Scorpion EXO 1000 that I can try on... I've heard good things about the Scorpion brand... Anyone have any experience with them??? . . . Kevin

I have the EXO 1000 and been using it for some time. I like the visor function which is why I bought it in the first place. It is larger, heavier and louder than my Shoei X-11 though. The X-11 being tighter and quieter is being used in the winter to stay warmer and drier. The Scorpion is nice in the summer/warmer weather because I can ride with the internal visor down and the external up for more air flow.

If Shoei wants to keep the size small they have to not include an internal visor because you either have to do away with padding or increase the size to allow for it.

Hi....I have been riding with the Nolan modular for the past year and find the sun visor very practical. However, the shield lies on the outside and is subject to vibration. Also
realize that you are adding a second shield and therefore, the visibility is slightly affected.
Furthermore, the Nolan is warmer, in hot weather it is not as vented as my Shoie full face. That Shark Evoline looks attractive and the sun visor is on he inside the main shield.
Imo it is worth a look see.....Regards....Gerry

If you like your Revolution your going to like the EVOLINE, it says it's heavier but I couldn't feel that when I wore it. The Laser is a good helmet but I find it's really heavy on long trips. Do you also get a line down the middle of the sun visor where dirt gets through the slide? mine is now permanently marked.

I have a slight one, the guy who brought mine back said the dealer told him to keep the inner visor clean. I use plastic polish on it and it really keeps the line off, but I know it's there, but not noticeable when riding. Also make sure you close the front by not pulling on the chin curtain. Those also have a habit of stretching out.

I have a Caberg Justissimo GT and love it.

The internal visor is immediately accessible for those low sunsets when you come around a mountain corner to find the sun suddenly in your eyes.

+1 on the Caberg. Modulars are inherently noisier than full face helmets, but I usually plug in with my Smokin' Buds and deal with it. The visor is more of a back up since I prefer to ride with my shades, but when I am caught without the glasses as mentioned above it is handy, otherwise, I seldom really use it.

I have a Nolan N102 flip up and am sold on the sun visor concept. But both the visor and flip up(modular model), in my opinion add wind noise which is causing me to look at other options. Tried the N103 flip up with the internal visor today. Very cool! While I may not get a flip up in the future, I'll seriously consider the internal visor. Either way, any future helmet I get will definitely have some sort of sun visor.

I tried on the Scorpion EXO 1000 yesterday at the shop... I've been using Shoeis the last few years and the Scorpion fit me pretty well... Seemed to be a nice looking and well built helmet... The drop down sunscreen lever on the side I like better than the HJC action on the top of the helmet... The only thing I"m concerned about, from the reviews I've read, is the ventilation or lack thereof... I'm down here in D/FW and it gets warm in the summer... And spring... And fall... hehe
Anybody using the Scorpion in warmer climates, how's it work in warmer weather???

Kevin

i have a caberg v2 raptor with a built in sun visor and think it is great. very useful on cloudy/ sunny days, in the scotland it can be cloudy one minute then sunny the next . save me stopping to put on the sunglasses or squinting the old eyes
i like the shark evoline.

I have just placed my order for the Shark Evoline I just had to they now do it in white.....YES..... I like white helmets, even though the six helmets I have are predominantly black.

I have had 2 HJC modulars and now have a GMAX modular. I bought the GMAX on price consideration and am well pleased with it. I installed a Fog City shade strip on the visor to help with the sun glare and am pleased with it. The HJCs did not fit my head as well as the GMAX due to the fact that I have an oval shaped head and the HJCs were more suited to a round head. I have heard that Shoei is more oval than round and will probably be my next hat. I like the modlulars because I wear glasses and it is less of a hassle to put on and take off. The noise does not bother me that much.

Both my wife and I have HJC Symax II's and like them. The sun visor works well. The only flaw is that the shield will snap closed when a good gust of wind catches it. This happens frequently when cruising over 55 mph. I've noticed other HJC models have a visor lock to prevent this. I can't understand why they didn't incorporate this modification on the Symax II. I believe it will get worse with use.

I loved my modular helmet so much I bought another when mine wore out. The new one Nolan N102 has the external visor, I wish it was an internal visor, but I do love it.

Bingo..

I have the Nolan 102 and got rid of the external sunvisor..

Reason, If you want to ride with the visor up for more air and need sun protection you out of luck..
Also the sun visor rubs into the regular visor and make a mark right across
that does not come off..

I like the helmet, not the sunvisor. Also when you want to get off your bike, and still need sunglasses what do you do?
Your bringing sunglasses anyway so whats the point.
You still have issue with the internal sunvisor (needing sunglasses when you get to your destination) but with the internal visor, it can be engaged immediately while still leaving the visor up. Best of all worlds if you ask me.

There are those of us who do not wear sunglasses . Ever. On or off the bike.

An inside visor would be great for the times when you need it, much like the flap you flip down in your cage.

As far as the inside visor taking up space, sure it does.

But the helmet does not need to be larger to accomadate it. The New Schuberth C3 is the smallest lightest modular ever ,and it has an inside visor.

Shoei really should get off their high horse and move up in features and technology. :04biker:

The N102 I had was OK... removed the external visor because it was an annoyance more than anything else... try and use it, useless because it was always filthy  Then it started to scratch the clear visor

Love my EXO1000... internal visor like my old Caberg :) Leave clear visor up... dark visor down to block some wind, shades on

Good point. I just realized something. I ride mt ST with the windshield down 90 percent of the time. I also ride with my clear visor partly open most of the time to allow some airflow on my face.

So much for the quietness of my RF1000...with the shield open it is as noisy as any helmet.
I just ride with earplugs all the time anyway.

I think the clear visor up and the inner visor down would be great...c'mon Shoei..."like they ever read these posts"

Ocho Nueve,

Oye Vato! I would consider looking at a Nolan 103 N-com before you make you choice. Nolan was not mentioned in your original shop visit. Try finding who has them in your area and trying one on. For some they are very comfortable, and they offer great features.

My wife and I are very happy with the Nolan. We feel it is the best feature set, comfort and safety balance.

Note however, what I am recomending is the Nolan 103 not the Nolan 102.
The 103 has an internal sun visor that flips down from inside the helmet, as well as an external clear visor. The internal visor can be flipped down and remain down when the chin guard is lifted up. I have totaly droped the habbit of taking sunglasses with me as I walk out the door for a ride. I have been known to misplace (loose) $80 pais of glasses. Although sometimes when I dismount I do miss my sunglasses, the visor has totaly replaced them for rides.

See the following threads: These will provide a fair take on good/bad/ugly of the 103.

In a nut shell:
103 are not 102's with external mount sun visors.
The visor is internal - and I like it. Tricky Micky did'nt like it.

PRO(s):
Fit/comfort/flip-up
N-Com seamlessly integrated communications, protected from elements, no flimsy mic.
2 ch. Bluetooth radios capable of 2 simultaneous connections to include A2DP stereo MPG
Intercom/interphone wirelessly with passenger.

CON(s):
Noisy if you have stock windscreen or sport bike. High wind screen no problem.
Ventilation does not work as well as it could, But better than non vented for sure.

Good luck with your choice.

I've read about it. Seems to be real noisy for $400. I'll deal with noise at $200, but at $400, I would expect it to be quieter than my Scorpion and it doesn't seem to be from what I've read.

I already have an Autocom wired on the bike so I don't need the N-com features (albiet, they would be nice to have). Those two items are why I ruled out the Nolan early. I have no doubt it's a nice helmet, but I need to upgrade two at the same time and especially with the state of things today, I can't justify twice the money for Nolan's over other helmets. I'd love to, but I just can't. Maybe down the road, but the War Department is still healing from the new forward deployment vehicle being parked in the garage and she's worried about being laid off.

"What's wrong with your old bike?" How many times have I heard that:rolleyes:

I appreciate all the feedback. I'm much more educated now, but no closer to a decision! Arrgh:D

The Evoline arrived Thursday.
I checked the build quality and it's good really good. The fittings are all nice and tight the inertia has no loose threads no bad stitching. The visor has three open settings which are positive they are open a little bit about 2mm open about 8mm and fully open. Both the Vents are nice and stiff to use I don't like floppy vents. The chin bar action is easy to fathom you must have the visor open a little for it to operate the single button makes it an easy one handed operation. On shutting the chin bar you have to push it back a little to lock it off. All the metal fittings including the lock mech are stainless.
I rode to work wearing it yesterday, it was very cold and frosty so I left the visor open first setting and both vents open, no misting up until I was stood at the lights, the second open setting stopped the misting very good I rode the rest of the way in with the visor like this no misting up and no cold air in my eyes. I like it, even though the visor has to be operated from the top centre which meant I was putting my hand in the line of vision, maybe I'm not doing it right.
On the ride home I played with all the settings on the helmet. Open face was too cold this time of year but the helmet felt very stable open even at 50mph. The internal sun visor is operated from the centre top of the helmet and although good at doing it's job of shielding the low winter evening sun, I would have liked it to be a little longer, I found that when looking at the speedo I could see the edge of it in my line of vision. The ratchet fastener is easy to use and unlike most it does have a lock tab on it to stop false openings if it gets caught on your collar. It can be opened and the strap released with one hand.
As far as the all important noise issue with modulars it's good not silent none ever will be, but it's better than My Lazer Revolution and is even better than the Shoei Multitec I used on the work bikes. It's actually on a par with my Nitro N510-V full face. I'm looking forward to trying it behind the MRA screen I bet with proper adjustment of the screen I can make the helmet even quieter.
I'm going to like living with this helmet it's good. Quirky but fun I think it looks great too. If your after a new helmet you owe it to yourself to try this Shark, just remember the fitting sizes are a bit odd. A large on me was way too big and I usually wear large.
Cheers
Paul
