I have been seriously considering buying a modular/flip up helmet.

Today I was in a motorsports store and got my first up close look at them (Shoei, KBC and HJC was what they had on the showroom floor). I was surprised when the salesman said reviews are mixed about the built in sun visors, and I noticed they are heavier than my Scorpion. So I'm curious:

1) If you own a modular helmet, do you like it? Would you buy another?

2) How do you like your sun visor?

Thanks guys, I appreciate your input.

Carole and I have HJC SYMax II's and like them. I don't like to wear sunglasses, so the sun shield works well for me.

+1.7!!!:D

Sy-Max only complaint is my visor at certain speeds,,, with the right cross wind??? The Sun Visor "Buzz's/Rattles" just a little when not engaged...

Have a Caberg with a visor,,, and it seems heavier than the SY-Max II,,, and warmer too... The Ear cut outs around a SY-Max will allow ear plugs to be installed... Not so easy on a Caberg...

I wear the Caberg in the Winter (((It seems warmer because around your ears it is like wearing mittens no air gap at all))) and localy as,,, well,,, I paid for it,,, I am going to use it... (((Cheap)))

I have a Caberg Justissimo GT and love it.

The internal visor is immediately accessible for those low sunsets when you come around a mountain corner to find the sun suddenly in your eyes.

My regular riding buddy has the Nolan modular with the external flip up sunvisor. He loves it. That particular model does not have any significant weight issue.

Plus, it has the N-Com ready features. You can add your bluetooth stuff. (for about $300).

Have the HJC. Like the helmet and the visor. The flip up is great because I can put the hat on and off without removing my glasses or forcing them through the visor opening. The sun visor is great, but since it is hidden away, I often forget to clean it, so when I put it down it is usually dusty. Great for those times when you come around the corner and find yourself blinded by the sun! Simple and easy to use.

My wife and I love our Nonlan flip front with the sunvisors !

I'm after a new modular the old Lazer is getting a bit long in the tooth. I have done a lot of searching and can i suggest that you have a look at the Shark Evoline. I tried one on the fit is a bit strange every helmet I have ever had has been a large I need a medium in the Evoline. The build quality is very good, the sun visor is very stable the HJC's sun visors I looked at flopped about, the weight didn't seem that heavy when I had it on. And of course it's got that trick flip over chin bar. I'm getting one.

Regarding the sun visor: I debated whether or not it would be truly functional or if it was just a cheap gimmick. I went ahead and bought a helmet with the drop down, internal visor (HJC).

Don't believe the press or the folks in the sales-room. The flip down visor is the best thing to happen in helmets. People complain about the additional weight, but my head and neck don't feel the difference that the visor may make. It's just so useful, I can't see how anyone could slam them. I sure wish Shoei would get on board: their helmets fit me best, but until they make a drop down sun-visor, they've lost a customer.

I was very close to the Scorpion EXO-1000, but the inflatable face-bladder thing seemed goofy.

My wife loves her flip helmet. I would like one too since I wear glasses. For now I'm using one of those strips across the top of the shield to block the low sun. Recommended.

I ware sunglasses cause they are  cool. I find the built in visor works well when I want additional darkness.

+2 on the visor buzz Mr. Limits mentioned.

Overall noise is high, but cranking up the windscreen takes care of that (Of course the cool factor drops when the screen raises.)

Also there is a third position for the visor that works well, but is missed by some - Hold the release button down and push down the visor at the same time - for the lowest position.

I saw this video a few weeks ago. Very cool helmet, but I don't think they're available in the US yet. Anyone heard differently? I like the idea of the chin bar locking behind the helmet.

Sounds like everyone likes their flip ups! I am happy to see a lot of people like their HJC's, it appeared to be a much better functioning helment than the KBC.

Now I know what to ask Santa for Christmas, I just have to choose the color:headbang:

I agree totally. For many years I have been a Shoei customer and love their helmets. Tops in my opinion on fit and quality.

I called them up and asked about the internal visor. I was told that Shoei will NOT consider that option for their helmets as they believe it would compromise the helmets safety.

I say :bsflag: to that as the other helmet makers are producing the internal visors and they are certified to the same standards Shoeis are. :04biker:

I really want badly to try the new Schuberth C3....but of course we can't get them...unless we order from the UK and get raped (high cost and shipping) in the process

I've been using the Shoei RF 1000 the last few years and really love them. They fit me well and seem to be light and quiet... That being said, the sun visor seems like a real good idea to me... I tried on the HJC helmet with the visor at the IMS show, fits pretty well and the silver colour would match my '07 well... I"m going to the shop saturday and see if they have one of the Scorpion EXO 1000 that I can try on... I've heard good things about the Scorpion brand... Anyone have any experience with them???
I'm not really interested in the Modular or flip up features, just the sun shields...

I love my Scorpion! I'm in the market for a flip up, so the EXO-400 might get retired to winter duty. I did some reading about the difference between the 700 and 1000. I can't remember which publication it was that reviewed them, but they thought the 700 was a better deal for the money, if you didn't care about the sun shade....That being said, I looked at a 1000 last week and that's one cool helmet. It had the cleanest and best feeling sun visor action compared to the KBC and HJC.

The Shoei was nice too, but Scorpion ranks right with them in comfort and safety for a lot less money.

I've been using a Nolan X-1002 for a couple of years now. It's a little heavy, but you don't notice the weight when the chin bar is down. The external dark visor is great, but sometimes I want it to stay in the "halfway" up position, and the wind blows it back down.:( Also, nearly all modular helmets will have a little more wind noise than a normal full-face helmet.

Would I go back to a full-face? Never!

I have a Nolan N102. I bought it because I used to wear glasses and I didn't want to buy perscription sunglasses and I didn't like wearing my clip ons under the helmet. Well I have since had Lasic done. So no more glasses :D

One added benefit to the external tinted visor is I have ridden through a swarm of bees and had my visor plastered. I simply flipped up the tinted part and continued riding like nothing happened. One complaint I do have is at about 70mph the visor will not stay up if you want it in that position. Some people can hear it buzz when up or feel the drag or notice a change (for the worse) in airflow to the vents. I really haven't noticed these issues. One thing about the Nolan is that it is loud inside. I wear earplugs because of it.

Overall I do like it. With the Nolan you can take off the tinted visor and put caps on the side of the visor and you would never know the helmet came with a tinted visor. That is nice for the people that later decide that they don't like the external visor. Other companies may do the same, I'm not sure.

Also someone mentioned the Nolan N-com. I wouldn't spend the money on it. Sure it is neat that it is integrated into the helmet but then you are stuck with Nolan. If you want to change brands you are going to have to sell the Bluetooth. I would rather stick with a universal solution over the N-com. Also I have read from people here that they didn't like the Nolan N-com all that much. There are cheaper solutions out there that have been reviewed better.
