Hi all I have a 2004 ST1300 which has developed a problem of cutting out when riding. It cuts out and all the lights go dim and sometimes it stays this way when the ignition is turned off, on turning on and off the ignition a few times I've noticed the fuel pump doesn't work. After more efforts it comes back and starts. It can work away for days without a problem and at times I've noticed if I turn on an indicator or something else electrical it happens again. I've changed the electric part of the ignition switch and its still happening. Any thoughts.

If the ignition is remaining on, when the key is removed, or turned off, check the wire harness on the left side of the bike, forward of the 24 pin connector to see if it was rubbing on the fan shroud and cut through the ignition wires trying to Hotwire your bike.

Thanks, the ignition lights are only half on like at very dim level, the ignition lead part of that was replaced with the new electric base of the ignition switch and at the time I disconnected that 24 pin connector and cleaned it. It improved and didn't happen again for about 2 months, but is now acting up again, definitely need to check the wiring in that area again and look at the earth's. I have seen on the forum that the American version of the 03 and 04 had recalls done due to earth problems, don't know about the Irish or European versions.

Check the 24 pin again and also the yellow buss above the RH headlight that connects all the grounds from electrical devices in the front half of the bike together. All the grounds (earths) in the front half of the bike then pass through a single green wire in the 24 pin white connector before going to the common earth on the frame under the rear of the upper fuel tank. Strange on and off symptoms and dim lights suggest a bad ground(s).

I saw this fix first on a UK bike.
