Is there a reason for the Denali + (red wire) to be connected here (what is it, back of main fuse maybe?) rather than directly to the battery post?

The most common reason is to avoid having to many, or to reduce the number of, connections made directly at the battery posts. Most commonly done when many electrical accessories have been added without the benefit of an auxiliary fuse block.

Thanks. That's what it is. Battery is crowded, Should have a fuse block.

There're better ways to tap power without cutting into the protective fuse cover.

I would replace the cover.
