There is a company called Hearing Dynamics that make custom earbuds . They make a set called the HD 2000 pro that are designed to be worn in motorcycle helmets . They sell for about 250.00 . They have you go to an audiologist to have a mold made of your ear which you send to them and they build a set based on the mold .

I got mine from an audiologist for $80. Be sure you tell them they are for use with a helmet.

I bought custom ear buds from PlugUp and have been very disappointed with them. The sound quality is fine, but the fit and feel isn't. She had me make the molds twice and while the second time was better, they still aren't as comfortable as regular, cheap Sony ear buds I have. Also, after only using them a dozen or so times, there's bare wire showing at the base of one of them as well as at the splitter piece. I'm guessing I've got a few more uses before the right one has the wire come completely apart.

Definitely not worth the $180 or so they cost, IMO. I just purchased a set of Shure SE530's and will be trying them out on the ride this weekend. I needed something to double as a good noise blocking ear bud for on airplanes.

Please let me know how they work... I'm needing some badly (I think I'm starting to lose some hearing).... And I definitely don't want to waste my money... Thanks.

Here's my first impression of the Shure SE530's. When you put them on in the house and listen to music, they are incredible. Better than any high fidelity headphones I've ever had. I can't wait to use them when I'm flying and want to drown out airplane noise and screaming kids.

For use in a motorcycle helmet, not so much. I'm probably going to go with a less expensive, smaller option for the bike. The way the 530's go into the ear causes problems when you pull a helmet down over your ears. If you only want one set of ear buds and need them to work with the motorcycle helmet, I don't think I'd recommend forking out the bucks for the SE530's.

I actually use shure e2c's with the small foam tips . Once you get them sealed in your ear properly they sound pretty good . They were about 100 bucks up here in the great white north where everything is more expensive.

I have tried the Shure SE530's and Sony MDR-EX51LP's - they both sound good, but they don't block exterior noise as well as the Plugup ear speakers I have, which sound just as good as either store-bought version, IMHO.

I love this thread, as I've really been wanting to get these. I have etymotic research ER-6's, and while they are OK outside the helmet (airplane, or in the past on the bike without a helmet), they suck big ones with my helmet on. They stick out too far, so the helmet hits them on the way down. I have to stick them wayyyyy in, and it just hurts after a while.

Highrider, I know yours looked cool when we went to the Jackpine RTE a few months ago. You said you got yours at a rally? Anyone know of somewhere around Chicagoland to get em? I'd really rather have someone do them for me as opposed to doing them myself at home and sending them out.

If you can wait until the bike show circuit comes through Chicago, there should be a couple of custom dealers to fit you and set you up. It is worth the wait. A couple of years ago you would be lucky to find 1 dealer at a show or rally. The last few rally's I have been to, there were at least 3 or 4custom earplug dealers.

I've had good luck with the Westones listed below. They're expensive, but the sound quality is awesome and they stay in when I put on my helmet

at the IMS there are several vendors that make custom molded earplugs, and can also install speakers in them. I ordered a set last year and I love them. The sound quality is fantastic. They are comfortable to wear. I am still working out the wire management, you need a special cord from Autocom to connect up to their system this allows use of the Autocom mic for voice and the earplugs as the speakers.

Highrider,
Do you mean the Motorcycle show that runs thru Rosemont? That's an easy wait, as we're finishing up riding season here and I've been just wearing foam plugs recently.

Thanks for the advice. I'll hold off until then.

I had the plug ups. Excellent sound quality, excellent sound blocking. Painful at first, but your ears adjust and then you do not notice them at all. Unfortunately the wire broke at the point it entered the earplug after about 3 months of use. I blamed my own carelessness, and bought another set. I was incredibly careful with this set. The wire broke in the same manner after 3 months. A very painful expensive lesson.

I think the problem with the Plugup earphones is that Marilyn does not compensate enough when removing material for the earphone component. This in turn results in a larger ear plug. I have had her make plain plugs and a powered set for me, the plain still fit comfortably after 3 years, the powered set came a little tight. I ended up grinding the contour in the area that bothered my ears, now I can wear them comfortably 14 hours straight.
As far as the durability of the earphones, I find the NHT version that I have to be very rugged (They are also the most expensive). They have a reinforced cable that will hold up to a lot of abuse, I don't know about the other versions that she offers.

Anyone heard of EAR, Inc?? They are in Boulder, CO. I went to a local audiologists who injected the soft mold material into my ears and made the impressions. He sends them off directly to Ears, Inc and in about two weeks, you get them back in the mail, along with two really nice cases to store them in when not wearing them. Cost a total of $215, which covered the fee for the audiologist, the earplugs and postage. You have your choice of color of the earpiece. Just wondering if anyone else have the custom Ears Inc plugs? I think their website is earsinc.com.

I have been using custom molded earplugs from bigearinc.com A little pricey but they either have booths at most motorcycle shows or In my case came right to my office to make ear impression then mailed plugs to me 3 weeks latter. I use them mainly for bike to bike communications. I can wear them all day as they are very comfortable.
