Adding a Luggage Rack on Top of a Top Case?

I've been contemplating adding a Givi E107 Luggage Rack to my Givi V46 Top Case. Anyone have this setup? My concern is with realistic usability... does the rack give me substantive usable space? Or is the wind blast too strong to actually pack anything there?

I would be concerned about overloading the back of the bike with aditional capacity on top of my top box. The top box itself is already overloaded with a laptop a few drinks, and some beef jerky.

I don't thikn it is I have been on long trips with my wife we can pack for 10 days using side bags, top box and a Roll bag on top of the top box. I only use it for small light stuff but it holds quite a bit. I have not had any problems with handling etc with this set up. I have a Givi E52 with the Givi rack. I use a T-Bag roll bag with a waterproof liner works great.:03biker:

I have this setup on a GIVI E50 liter and ST1100A. The rack comes in handy when camping, strapping wet or damp items on the rack instead of inside the top box or panniers were the moisture will build up. I've not had any handling or wind issues. I try to tie down loose fabric or plastic to keep from flapping.

CAVEAT:The attach point on a Honda ST1300 is PLASTIC!. Just thought you should know... Overload it at your own peril....:22yikes:

The attachment point on the Givi box to the ST is metal to metal. The top rack is usable. You don't want to put anything really heavy there. What we use it for is to hold my CPAP machine and our toiletries. See below for our last trip.

Uh huh.... And that metal plate that is attached to all that silvery stuff (including the grab rails) is PLASTIC!.... I found out the hard way by over tightening my new turbo tom rear rack.... cracked it wide open... The whole thing is plastic and only weighs about 1 lb.... :D

UPDATE

I did do the install of the E107 rack. In the end, it looks really nice and I think it will prove quite useful for small bits on camping trips. (I'm envisioning putting damp towels or a wet swimsuit up there in the Jet Steam to dry while I ride during the day.)

As I went to do the install, I was quite optimistic. Everything looked very straight forward - and it was..... the problem was I didn't realize until I had all the mounting holes drilled that the rack itself was damaged. One of the four posts that the rack sits on was bent about 5 degrees - just enough that I spent a good 40 minutes widening holes and wiggling the damn thing trying to get all four screws started in the threads on those posts! After I realized that the rack was misaligned, a couple sharp blasts from a hammer had her straightened out just enough to get the screws started and pulled down. Job should have taken 10 minutes... turned into an hour... Lesson learned.

Has anyone put a rack on top of the Honda line box ?

TurboTom makes a great rack for the top of the Hondaline top box! I installed one on mine and used it for my Trip to Taos and when taking the wife with me on a weekend ride to Lompoc. I only loaded it up with my CamelBack (look-a-like) and when my wife and I took off, I used for riding stuff like jacket liners & gloves and such. Both times it really worked great!:woo

Rack behind the wife...

I have the Givi rack on my Honda top box, w/ spoiler. I had to bend up the lip of the rack to clear the spoiler.

I also added 2" diameter fender washers on the inside, and 1" diameter washers on the outside. Since someone may use the rack as a handhold while getting on/off. Soooo, to stop the lid from cracking, I installed big washers with a conformal pad of epoxy on the inside. (I also got rid of that girl friend  ) I showed my Wife the cracks and informed her that my shoulders were her handhold, not the rack.

No problems, now ;), ;)

Using large washers is a good idea....I carried it a bit farther...I also used some rubber washers between the the top and bottom washers. The top washers are just bigger then the posts, but on the inside I used the fender washers.

I can Vouch for Turbo Toms Racks. I was doing 50mph when I hit the 60mph Pick-Up Truck. 19 Year Old, Drunk Punk, With No Insurance, Ran the Red Light. Let Me Tell You Tom's Rack Passed With Flying Colors. It was the only thing on the Bike That Wasn't Busted. I bought it for my Sleeping Bag on Camping Trips. Bike's Totaled and I never got a chance to try it out. I kept The Rack. I guess I'll have to get another ST1300.

Givi rack carrying a ton of stuff - loaded on a topbox crammed with luggage. Couldn't fit any more into the panniers either.

Get It ON ... .. :wt1:

Never a problem [.. well, apart from falling over with the extra top-heavy weight from time-to-time, and breaking the odd mirror housing or two ..]

Thanks,,,I am looking forward to them.... I just installed my Honda top box this eveing and taking it on it's first trip next Tuesday... :)

Good luck on your trip!

To be clear... my set-up is the Givi Luggage Rack on the *Givi* Top Case... not the Honda......

I'll post pics of the install anyway, as there maybe others who'd be interested in seeing it.
