50th Anniversary Model - Decals

Following the failure of the coolant pipes on my gold pan and the ABS system a year earlier, I decided to take her off the road and try and bring her back into a decent shape. I have been gradually chipping away and it has come to the plastics and the "should i or shouldn't I" question about getting her re-painted. Some of the plastics are damaged and may have to be replaced with decent ones which may involve getting them painted in "Y158".

Decals for the upper fairing and panniers are not available so I will have to resort to reproduction decals. Looking at photo's on st-ownders, the web and ebay, I can see that some upper fairings had the "Pan European" badge either as a plastic stick on, or a decal under the paint. This leads me to believe that the one I have does not have correct UK panels as the bade is under the clear-coat as opposed to the stick on black and gold one (Honda UK have confirmed that mine was an official 50th Anniversary in gold). I also think that this might mean that the pinstripes are also incorrect for the UK model as the gold stripe is not chrome gold but more of a dull one. It also does not match the style that's used on 1999 and above models like on my blue 2000 St1100.

As I'll be having to get the decals made up, I was wondering if anyone would happen to know what colour the thin tracer line might have been on the anniversary model. Photos on the web just won't zoom in enough to work out the colour. My blue one has a thin light blue line beside the gold but on the 50th Anniversary it's dark, but what colour is it.

I have attached some shots of the panels and would ask if they do look genuine?

Any other comments / observations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Nick,
Decals on your bike look totally different to mine (albeit, mine is the Australian version), and yours is a UK version.

I did a lot of background hunting when I bought it (in Australia), and Honda only released 500 of the ST1100AX with the "50th Anniversary Decals / Badging" in "Sienna Gold Metallic Y-158M", and distributed 10 to each of their top 50 distributors in limited countries.
Austria, UK, Belgium, Holland, Portugal, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Australia.

The first anniversary ones had a raised, black & gold "Pan European" plastic badge on the side of the upper fairing, and the later ones all had the full "Pan European" vinyl decals under lacquer.

There should be three "50th Anniversary" red & silver raised badges, one on each side (above the side bars), and one on the nose (above a shiny gold "Honda" decal, on the black air intake).

Panniers: The striping is a thick shiny gold one (approx. 10mm), and a thin dark blue one (approx. 3mm), that cross over each other. The "ST" is shiny gold, and the "1100" is silver. There's also the large decals on the panniers with the script in silver, and the 12 stars in blue.

Fairing: The striping is a thick shiny gold one (approx. 10mm), and a thin dark blue one (approx. 3mm), that cross over each other, and the "Pan European / ST1100" decals on each side in silver with the stars in blue.

Tank: The "Honda & wing" are shiny gold.

Wheels: The rim edge has a matt gold strip (approx. 10mm wide).

Tail: There's a shiny gold "Honda" above the tail light

Not sure of the colour code for the "shiny gold" striping, as it doesn't match any of my paint charts.

Photos of mine attached - hope this helps ... ...

... ... the other stuff on mine are all aftermarket and not standard (fairing side reflectors / topbox side reflectors / pannier rear reflectors / panier & tail rear chevrons

Hi Kevin
Thanks for the information, this is really interesting and will certainly help me in working out which ones are correct. Looking at the UK bikes, the panniers all seem to just have ST1100 stripe but I'll certainly research further. I may have to end up tracing the ones on my 1100AY and then try to see if I can get them made. It's certainly going to be a fun time ahead. I am thinking that the panels must have been replaced - perhaps with those of a later model or they have been reproduced and laquered in. The fact that the Air Cover "Wings" are silver does not seem quite right either.

Your ST is a cracker and looks really well.

Cheers

Nick

Hi again Kevin

I forgot to ask you yesterday, on the panniers is the silver "1100" a Matt Silver or is it chromed? I can't quite tell from the photo.

Cheers

Nick

This might help from official Honda Sales brochure for UK 50th anniversary models.

There were certainly more than 10 in the UK.

Same Black and Silver fairing badge as all ST11s of the time. Gold Honda Wing in tank. Only "extra" was the two red/silver fitted on fairing just above the "fins".

Have a friend who has one if you want more pics.

Oh and a bit of "useless" information.
Sherwood Motorcycles had for some reason a large number of the red/silver badges in stock and sold them on fleaBay over several years. Have seen them on top yoke and various other spurious places on 50th Anni VFRs etc.

And there was a police mechanic based North of Glasgow who bought up white ex service Pans fitted dual seats and repainted them in various colours. Would not be be surprised if he didn't do a few gold ones.

All should be '99 registered bikes (probably built in '98 ... ...)
@V4 Rider, the black / silver raised "Pan European" badge was only fitted to the early anniversary models (probably built in '98). The later ones had the vinyl decals (probably built in '99).
There was a choice of factory fitted topbox - full size (as shown on the catalogue) or a half height version that would hold ... ... not a lot ...

It will be interesting to see photos of your friend's one, and the difference between UK and Australian models

Checked and his has three 50th Anni red/silver badges. One on either side behind the fun and on on front.

Thanks for all the additional information and apologies for not responding sooner. I have been totally bombed out with work.

I am still puzzled with the decals on mine and I am not sure if they are original or are reproduction. Looking at the rear of the upper panels and side panels, the gold paint is peeling which suggests that it has had some sort of respray. But then again, the stripes are smooth under the lacquer and there is no real ridge to indicate they have been lacquered over. Looking at the decals on my 2000 AY, they are just stuck on top.
My 50th Anniversaey was registered in May 1999 and was sold by Chiswick Honda. It's got a Givi Top box which suggests this has been added post purchase. I have 1 red Anni badge on the front, the others are missing also leading me to think some panels may have been pinched and replacements painted up.

At lead I know it is a genuine 50th Anniversary model confirmed by Honda but is it worth spending a lot on it to bring it back to decency?

If you can also get some photos of your friends one and perhaps some closeups of the decals, I can see how they compare with my AY and maybe I can trace them and get some made up.

Cheers
Nick

Will try and get some pics in next few weeks.

Somewhere in garage have an ST11 top box you could get repainted in Gold.

Nick, whether it's "worth" doing is down to you, but in my experience restoring motorcycles to their former glory will rarely be profitable. If you want it to look like it just left the factory doors prepare yourself for a wallet emptying experience. Good paint work is not only extremely difficult to find but eye watering expensive.
That's before the parts bill hits the credit card.
Good luck.
Upt'North.

It would only be worth it to you, no one else. These are not valuable bikes in any way, no matter condition. They are pretty much just a very reliable tool.
