Hi everyone. I have an ST1300 for sale. low miles as you can see in the thread title. Has not been driven since September 2023. Selling due to owner's death (my boyfriend) earlier this year. I just got the clear title. It was running well when we last rode, and he took good care of her. He purchased in Spring 2022 from a dealership (Hawkeye Motorsports) here for around $4500 if memory serves. I do not have the original receipts. He died in Montana, and his son (executor) was unable to locate. Sorry if this is TMI but I've been accused of not being transparent enough in a lot of places. Redditors can be brutal. So, I finally have the clear title, Iowa plates and registration. Pictures attached. Steve really loved riding her. Hoping to find a good home.

Do you guys need a VIN? If so it's JH2SC51035M300893

A good home is just around the corner for this beautiful ride. Thanks for sharing her with us and for sharing your story.
Lots of good folks on this site to give you all the guidance you want/need.
GLWS and all the best to you Sue in the New Year.

I went to see the bike. Looks real nice. It's been on a trickle charger for quite a while. Even though the seller took pics of the dashboard, with the mileage, just a few days ago, it was dead dark when I turned the key. It's been stored with just a minimal amount of gas for a long time. I used a booster battery and got it cranking a few times, but never fired up. Any thoughts on why the battery seems suddenly dead and if there might be something wrong with the gas stored like that. How can we get it started? I don't think it would be a problem to jump start it from a running car, would it? When I go next, I'll bring some fresh gas and some Sea Foam. Any other thoughts?

New battery and gas should get it going.. probably does have some gunk built up in places. A trickle charger won't revive a battery that's dying only keeps a healthy battery healthy as long as possible.

docw1/ Bill, Do not jump start from a running Car. The charging system from a running car may damage the bike electronics. A good healthy car battery should be enough with out the car running. If it does not start with that then some other work needs to be done. Did you hear the fuel pump pressurize the fuel rail on the bike?

........there might be something wrong with the gas stored like that. How can we get it started?

A large part of one of my local mechanics business is trying to revive garage queens with no pulse.

Before starting surgery on them, he fills the tank with new gas and cleaner, like Sta-Bil 360, cranks the bike for a while, and then let it soak like that. He claims that after 2-3 days, some of them just perk up without needing further work.

But if he sees dirt or scale in the tank, he'll flush and drain first. He also claims he can tell how bad a problem it is going to be just by smelling the tank....I can't.

Maybe the key was left on? Happens. First thing you need to do is get the battery fully charger or a new(er) battery in it. Could even take one out of another bike just to get it running. Without a good battery everything else is a waste of time. The electronics need a good battery to operate. Good battery some fresh gas I'm sure it will fire.

A battery will go flat meaning won’t hold a charge, as it might have dried up a bit and arced. That is a short and trying to jump it could be damaging. If I were to buy this I wouldn’t even try to crank it until I did a few things. A low mileage bike would have some pristine health that premature efforts could damage and cause several things to go south.
First a new battery and don’t jump it, if it sat that long I’d be doing more extraction of the fuel before filling it and adding additives or sea foam. lift the seats, pull the side cowling off and look for any wire or rodent damage. Once a new battery is installed - clean fuel premium with low ethanol. listen for the fuel pump to prime when you turn the key. Flip the kill switch on so that engine doesn’t start. Check the oil level, and coolant. Check the F1 light for a solid light when turning on the key. Blinking will indicate issues. Instrumentation should read as she posted it. If no apparent issue change the oil, check the air filter and intake plastics for rodents/blockage. Then try to start it. After that it’s on to the fuses, and checking the plugs, tires and switches - by this time if the ECU wasn’t harmed it should fire up , do preflight stuff then test the drive.

Sorry for your loss, and nice pics of a great looking bike. If winter wasn’t upon us I’d be very tempted to pick this one up myself. As I posted a reply to one of the respondents - some prudent effort will assure keeping as pristine as possible. Love the red - so sorry he’s not here to enjoy it with you.

I do the same thing with MMO, and yes, smelling the fuel provides a good indication of what you’re dealing with.

Well, I replaced the battery with a similar, but not identical, one, It was a little taller, so I couldn't replace the metal strap and plastic cover. The lights all turned on but the gas gauge was blinking. I've never seen that before. Turned over well, but never caught on. Couldn't hear a fuel pump when I turned it on. Filled ul the fuel tank and added some MMO and SeaFoam. Wha is the significance of a flashing gas gauge? I told her to wait a couple days and try it again. I didn't 't want to get any deeper into it. Working in a cold garage, with only the tools I brought with me. Any further suggestions?

In the late 90's, I rebuilt a 1986 Honda 700s. I bought it with a rod punched through the case. Upon rebuild completion, I tried to start it, no success. That smell still haunts me. Yep, dumped original old fuel, cleaned things.........fired right up. Too bad I didn't break it in properly. The thing started smoking at high rpms (10k mile mark). What a fun rockin bike. I hear it took forever to reach 115mph from 100mph.

Sorry to bear bad news. Most likely the fuel pump and or sensor went bad. There are some articles on this blinking gas gauge issue. On this site, along with doing a search on line for “ “ST1300 gas gauge blinks”. Most ended up replacing the fuel pump and sensor. Might need a diagnostic tool to assure no issues with the ECM.
