2008-06-23 - Dug - Doug Dunwoody

Sad story, always sorry to hear things like this. RIP, Dug.

And condolences to the family. He and they are in our prayers

Doug's daughter Jenn has put together a "memorial" web site for Doug. She asked me to post it here if that is OK. It is very well done and provides a great look at the life and times of a special person.
Thanks
Rod

Brother of a Rider

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Brother, Doug Dunwoody, was killed on June 23, 2008 while riding with 4 friends through Montana/Wyoming. He was 55 years young and had just ridden the Beartooth Pass the day before his accident. It was a dream he had to ride the "tooth" and I am so glad he not only did it, but shared the ride with his friends.
We will never know what happened as he lost control on an open sweeping corner and died when he hit a tree. He was a conscientious and safe driver and always endeavored to live to a higher standard so his family and friends good benefit from that standard. I will visit the site one day, but not today.
In the fullness of time, when I am an old man, I will look back and think that Dug passed doing what he loved and in one of the most beautiful places in the world. For that I will be thankful, but for now I miss him and I am mad that this has happened.

Re: 2008-06-23 - Dug - Doug Dunwoody January 01, 2011

Christmas has just passed for 2010. My thoughts of my brother Doug are stronger than ever. It has been 2 1/2 years now since he passed away whilst riding his Goldwing just outside of Cooke City, Montana. He had just crossed over into Wyoming when his Goldwing grounded out forcing him off the road and into the trees. Perhaps the exhaust or kickstand hit, we will never know. I have visited and marked the site. A cross made of timber from a tree that he hit marks the site approx. 7 miles from Cooke City just inside the Wyoming Border marker. There is a pull-out right at the corner and you can park off the highway. The cross can just be seen from the highway, but if you stop at the pull-out and walk 15 meters south you will see it where the ground slopes away. There will be distinct markings on the trees from the crash. If your riding this road, stop for a moment and say hello to Doug. He would like that. It is one of the most spectacular yet peaceful spots I have seen in my life. When I was there, I felt he was truly watching me and most likely laughing at me trying to make his cross with a small axe and fly line to hold it together. I hope it is still standing. If your going by please feel free to make some adjustments to keep it upright.
I have come to terms with Doug's passing and will always have the memories of the 2 years prior to his passing when we re-connected, golfed, skiied and had many nights of catching up on the previous 22 years apart.
I now live in Australia again and one day will return to the site and drive the Bear's Tooth Pass again, but in the meantime for anyone going by, please drop in and check out the site. If you do, I would love to hear from you. I can be emailed at jsdunwoody@gmail.com.

woodi/js, sorry to hear of this. 2 1/2 years is a long time when you miss someone, but also probably seems like such a short time ago. It is good to hear of you two being able to spend time together before his passing.

I try to get on Hwy 212 every year... I'd be glad to stop and pay my respects, add a layer of fishing line to the cross, even take pictures of the site and email them if you'd like. I think the site is approximately here, but do you have a more precise location? (I'm uncertain of where based on the description above).

Hey John, (great name...I'm John Dunwoody)
That so much for your reply. It's great to get a message like yours out of the blue. As I posted to fnmag, time heals, but you never forget and I do miss him. Here is the Google Map link to Doug's corner.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?oe=&...981162,-109.842811&spn=0.003066,0.006866&z=17

Hope it works. You were not far off with your map. Once you pass the Wyoming Border sign going south, you need to go a few kms and there is a gravel pull-out on the left side just after going over a creek. You will see the trees that have the bark off. I hope the cross is still there and standing! Thanks so much for your offer to stop by from time to time....now I'm living back in Australia, it's good to know someone will say hello to Doug.
Kind Regards,
John

Thanks fnmag for the post.
Time does heal, but you never quite get over something like this and I sure miss him!

I visited Doug's roadside memorial yesterday, and will post some pictures in the next day or so.

The place is beautiful and peaceful, and led me to a moment of prayer for all the fallen riders and thanks for family, friends, and loved ones.
:pray1:

Thanks, John. Important to all of us to remember those who have passed.

...Someday we'll join them
And climb on our motors
And ride all the way 'round the sun.

As promised, here are a few pictures of Doug's memorial ...

These two pictures show the view looking NW while standing at Doug's memorial, and a view SE towards the memorial from the far side of the road. The memorial is at the base of the tall skinny tree, pointed at by the black arrow in the second picture.

A beautiful and peaceful place...

Thanks for stopping John. I don't think there is a day goes by that those of us who knew, and rode, with Doug don't miss him.
Rod

You're welcome Rod. I hesitated to post this as it may stir up feelings, but I promised woodi that I would stop by and visit the site. I've emailed woodi but haven't gotten a response...do you happen to have a way to point him here? TIA.

John,
Woodi (Doug's brother John) has moved back to Australia but I think he still checks in once in a while. He is not a rider so his visits here are sporadic. I don't have his new email address but I will pass this on to his BOL.
Thanks again.
Rod
