Found this rubber thingy on the floor after replacing the air filter......not sure where it fell from?

Check around the lower lip of the upper gas tank ... there's usually one on the right side and one on left side, where the tank meets the frame

Thanks, ......nothing on both sides. The bike made a few trips to a local mechanic, I suspect the other one is on the floor of his shop. Wuuld be good to have a pix on where to fit this remaining one. Looks like I need to buy one for the other side.

Try looking on the shop parts fiches.

17514-mcs-G00 is showing for uk models. Shown as not in stock, but that means that they can get hold of it.

Looking at pictures of the two - google image search - the two parts are different designs. Yours looks more like the one that is on my bike - quoted above.

CMSNL shows 17516 KAZ 000 as only being used on the 2003 California model.

Also get some glue. The stuff they use for the chrome retainer clips on the brake caliper is good - very strong and flexible.
Three bond 1521 (or Uhu Extreme repair is what I use)

Can't hurt to take the one in, show it to him, and ask if he's seen the other.

Thanks. This helps.

Went and checked on my old 03 that has been in his shop even more times.....they are both missing on the 03 as well. He must be collecting them!

Just ordered 3 of these guys. Thanks again all.

Thanks. Must be a part that is prone to walking, quite a few available on the web, including aftermarkets sold under the same PN but slightly different geometry. Looks like the important thing is to have some kind of cushion there.

If they walk again, I'll probably just stuff some pieces of bicycle inner tube in there.....

I may have to do that anyway....after a second look, am not sure there is enough space between the frame and the tank for this cushion....may be why he left them out...!

There is a thin slot that slips over the edge of the tank, and it has a strip of double sided tape to keep them in place.

Thanks. Interesting. Not a trace of adhesive left, neither on the cushion (the one left, found on the floor), nor on the tank.

Cheapest replacement available was actually in Japan, but the most affordable shipping option was pushing delivery weeks out. Interesting that the item was flagged with "No Tariff"......

Should have paid attention to your post before ordering 3 x 17516 KAZ 000. According to the part fiche, they should fit my 2003, but as you wrote, they do not look like the one that fell off the 2012 I was working on and is a 17514-mcs-G00.

However....I cannot really see an obvious difference between the 03 and 12 tanks that might prevent an 03 tank dampener to fit on a 12.

17516 KAZ 000 for the 03 comes with an adhesive strip that theoretically should help keeping it in place.....but I bought the 03 second hand in 05 and they were gone already. So glad it took only 20 years to notice these missing dampers, before the bike could explode.

17514-mcs-G00 for the 2012 has a longer slot for engaging the edge of the tank, which should help for better retention, but ended up falling off anyway....

Thanks.

Just for future reference - there was a change in tank design between 06 and 08 models - particularly around the joining hose between the upper and lower tanks. If I remember correctly (which is a very big assumption these days), the early hose had different diameters at each end and different size tube clamps - the pipe end emerging at the rear underside end if the tank had a smaller diameter than it had in later years. Later models, the joining hose was the same diameter at each end.

So there may be other difference in tanks as well.

I raised my 1300's gas tank just a few inches yesterday to run some wires underneath it (for new instruments I'm putting up front) and both of these little rubber cushions fell off the tank when I lifted it. Apparently they were glued on at one point but all I see now is the crusty dried remains of decades old glue, looking very similar to old carpenters glue.

On my bike, if you look at the paint just below the fuel tank about 6 inches from where it would meet the front edge of the seat you can tell where the rubber pads were positioned because there's a little difference in the gloss on the paint -- a little imperfection caused by the rubbing of these pads.
