A few people have emailed me recently wanting to know how I finished the mounting of the 08 side panels on my 05 ST1300. Sorry I couldn?t post earlier as I have been very busy with work.
Here is an explanation and some pictures of how I made mounting plates for the 08 panels. I will note here that I eliminated the use of one mounting post on each side and basically have a 3 point mounting arrangement for both. All of the brackets are custom fit, so dimensions probably won?t do much good. All of the rubber grommets I bought from the auto parts store, they have a ?? ID and are made to be mounted in 1/16? sheet.

The right side is the easiest side; I used the front mounting screw for the battery support on the backside of the aluminum side support. The right side was made from 1/16 steel sheet metal with a ?? rubber grommet mounted and a slot cut for the bolt. Loosen the 2 bolts and slip it between the support and the battery mount front screw.

Make sure the grommet aligns with the post on the new cover and you are done on the right.

The left side brackets were made from ?? aluminum angle 1/16? thick and cut about 1? long.

The left side bottom bracket was bolted to the side support, I drilled and tapped a 10-32 hole for the screw. This has a ?? grommet mounted on it for the post on the new cover.

The left side top bracket was mounted to the relay mounting jacket and has a ?? hole in it for the expansion fastener shown.

Make sure the grommet aligns with the front post on the new cover and this side is done.

Without buying all the replacement parts, this seems to be the next best solution. I have fitted 2 ST1300?s so far and this method works well.
I hope this helps some of you that are considering these side covers.

Found them ,and ordered a set for my 04. Cost ? $ 6.05 each Canadian. Cheap :)

Part numbers are 83460-MCS-D90 and 83410-MCS-D90 (Confirmed part numbers with dealer)

Re: Mounting 2008 side panels

Where'd you order them from? The 2008 ST1300 isn't yet listed in any of the online parts fiches that I usually use.

Re: Mounting 2008 side panels

other than looking different, any functional improvements with the side panels?

Re: Mounting 2008 side panels

I was just at my dealer who has a 2008 on the floor. I noticed, that at the two small rectangle areas by the foot rest there is now a fixed plastic insert in this area also. This replaces the loose rubber flap.

I was wondering if anyone with a 2008 or a parts list noticed any other differences in this area out of sight?

Still waiting on my side covers, they are on backorder.

Hi Dave,
Any chance you'd be willing to make up some sets of your mounting brackets for those of us who are not as mechanically skilled as you? If so, I'd be interested.

Re: Mounting 2008 side panels

Any idea of how to mount the left side without drilling and tapping the frame support on the bike?? The idea of doing that more than a little scares me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has thought of 08 covers. You're well past me.

Also on your rear bars, those are the best pics I've seen for them including the ones in bygdawg's posts.

I've noticed several changes in 08. Biggest one is a different FI system. Then also almost all of the rubber heat insulator blankets are not used. Wonder if bike runs cooler now for 08.

Cooler would be better.

I also noted new front brake calipers and small covers by foot pedal in small triangular hole. What is new with the fI system?

Looks like everything. new computer, test procedures, code reading, wire harness, etc.

The manual is for 03-08 and is almost twice as thick as my XX manual. Mostly for the FI changes for 08.

They have the 03-07 procedures then a seperate spot for 08.
